Copper coil experiences

Booked in to get the copper coil fitted next month and just looking for some real experiences.

I’ve been off hormonal contraception for 3 years since trying for DD (we’ve just been using condoms) and didn’t realise how much the hormones affected my libido until I came off them. Now that DD is finally in her own room and sleeping through, we’re ready to ditch the condoms as things are a bit more frequent again.

But I’ve read so many horror stories — severe pain during/after insertion, partners feeling the strings, the coil being expelled, etc. I’m now worrying myself over it.

Would really appreciate hearing how others found it. Thanks in advance.

Honestly, it wasn't great for me. Having it fitted was absolutely fine, but I bled almost constantly the whole time I had it in. I gave it a while to settle as sometimes it can, but eventually gave up after a year and had it removed.

But I know others who had absolutely no issues with it.

I've had one for years, never any issues like described. But they aren't for everyone, a friend had hers out after only 6 months. She gained a lot of weight in that time and blamed it on the hormones.

Not my specialist subject but I know a friend had some kind of reaction which spread a rash over her face....somehow

I have one without hormones. Yes it was painful to insert and I bled for a week but it's a small price to pay for five years' peace of mind. I have not had any problems since, I don't feel it, my partner doesn't feel it, it's all great.

I switched from hormonal contraception to the copper coil to see if I felt better/ different after spending most of my adult life (15- mid 30s) on the pill. I'd been having PMS and gone off sex a bit and I was hoping it might have been due to the pill.

Insertion was uncomfortable but the 'pain' was over in a second or two and then I just felt mildly crampsy the rest of the day. Minimal spotting and my cycles were pretty regular but my periods were much heavier than they had been on the pill. I kept it in for the full 5 years. I didn't really notice any difference in my moods/ libido though.

A partner had one which I could feel, but that really wasn't an issue.

I've had two copper coils back to back. The first one was great with the exception of slightly heavier periods but being able to forget about pills and condoms for 5 years was brilliant.

Second time was a nightmare. Constant thrush infections, and in the end it dislodged. It came out after 6 months and I decided not to have another. I kept my local pharmacy in business with all the Canesten I bought!

bigfatlab · 16/11/2025 17:26

I’ve one for nearly 15 years
it’s great
not problems with hormones
slightly heavier bleed
husband can’t feel it
never let me down
and we have put it through its paces should we say !!🤣🤣

Mrsknowitall · 16/11/2025 23:41

I had real heavy periods on mine then had to go for a scan for something and on my notes it said that it had been incorrectly fitted, so I wasn’t even protected, I had it out and went on a progesterone only pill (I suffer a lot on the normal pills) my periods have all but stopped on them, they are very light and if i forget to take a pill it’s only 2 days you have to use protection or not have sex for rather than a week.

bluedabadeedabadoo · 16/11/2025 23:49

I had it for for about 3 years before child then about 11/12 years after. I never had any major issues. Periods were heavier but regular. It was painful to insert (especially pre child) but fine after a day or so.

Tigeresslearns · 17/11/2025 15:13

I've had 2. Both absolutely great. My current partner can feel it in certain positions but he doesn't care that he can - I think it gives him a little ego boost being long enough to feel it ;)

Definitelynotme2022 · 17/11/2025 16:41

I've had 2 x copper coils, and they were great. No great pain on removal or insertion, and it's over with very quickly. Just take a couple of paracetamol.

As with any coil (I'm on my 3rd Mirena now) there can be some after cramps and bleeding as it settles in. I had half expected my periods to be heavier, but they weren't.

All in all, it was a positive experience.

Girlmom35 · 21/11/2025 11:28

I've had a copper coil and a hormonal one.
Everyone react differently to them.

My experience:
Copper one hurt to put in. Was on the sofa with painkillers for the rest of the day and felt like really bad menstrual cramps for a few days after.
Then, nothing for years. Perfectly comfortable. A bit heavier flow and my periods lasted longer, but worth it to be free of hormones.
So pain... compared to childbirth it was nothing worth mentioning. Wouldn't defer me from getting another one.

Hormonal one got placed after childbirth and I barely noticed it being inserted, but I think that was because it was so close post birth, 5 or 6 weeks give or take.
Had irregular bleeding and periods for 6 freaking months. Then nothing since. Also no pain or cramping. Which freaks me out because I have no reference point for accidental pregnancy. I didn't think this would throw me off, but I need the reassurance of a monthly period for my peace of mind.

I regret being pushed by my doctor towards the hormonal one. I'm getting a new one in 2 years and absolutely getting another copper coil.

NCforthisboard · 22/11/2025 11:51

I’ve had a Mirena fitted. It great and periods have stopped totally. Worked for me definitely.

Break4Love · 26/11/2025 22:40

I just had my copper coil removed after 10 years. It's definitely not pleasant going in but it's really only for a few seconds. Painkillers that evening and that's that for ten years. Best contraception I ever had.
