Age gap

My 18 year old daughter is dating a 25 year old man and I’m not overly keen on the age gap, I also recently walked in on her giving him a blowjob but that’s another story, would you be concerned at the age gap? Not sure if I’m overreacting

I wouldn’t with that age gap personally although I don’t have a daughter .

men mature much later than women and I think a 7 year gap at 18 is just about acceptable. If she was 16 and he was 23 I’d find that weird and wouldn’t like it and if he was 30 I’d also find that a bit odd.

NO. I have a DD the same age. Yes, she is above the legal age of consent (in my view, this is to be having sex with 18 year-old boys, not with 25 year-old adult men.) A schoolgirl. You know which adult male was pulling this shit with schoolgirls? Russell Brand, that’s who. It’s not right, and it’s predatory. The power dynamic is not equal. She’s technically an adult, but she (I assume), still lives in your home.

As an 18 year old, I was in a relationship with a guy that told me he was 27. It turned out he was 33.

Looking back, I do cringe about it.

His friends also had girlfriends the same age as I was. Though times have changed now since I was 18, it never even occurred to any of us that technically something was off about it.

There were many red flags as it was but the sex was fantastic!

My parents were not happy at the age gap but I wouldn't listen to them and if they'd have given me an ultimatum I would have gone against them due to my age/rebellious age.

It eventually ran it's course.

I wish I had listened to them but it's a life lesson you have to learn yourself in my opinion.

Maturity will win out I expect - as long as she is maintaining friendships of her own age.

@Luc688 I think that it very much depends on the maturity of the individuals, assuming that legal ages were respected previously and this is a new relationship.
Would you be bothered if he was 40 and she 33?. I think as long as she isn't being overly naive and you aren't seeing any other red flags from him then this is acceptable. As another poster said males and females mature at different rates emotionally and she probably finds males in her immediate peer group immature, and probably more out for a shag / casual relationship than someone a little older. Has she had previous relationships with boys or her ages that have been serious?

Depends a lot on life stages too, if she's a 1st year uni student and he's not long out of uni or a PhD student they are closer in lifestyle Vs if she's still at home/ college and he's been in the workplace for 7 years.

Sadcafe · 03/05/2025 09:15

If he was 50 and she was 43 probably nothing would be said, the age gap isn’t the issue, it’s not that massive, it seems much more of a thing that she’s still a teenager and that just triggers concerns in lots of people

CuriousD · 03/05/2025 09:46

Odd how no-one asks and questions about his qualities as a person.

If he , mentally stable, morally upstanding and unselfish who gives a toss that the age gap is 7 years.

mnmnddddd · 04/05/2025 06:20

That sort of age gap is less an issue in layer life, but at 18, it would make me uneasy.
Can you influence it? Probably not easily, if she's a typical teen.
It's tempting to say welcome him into your home regularly. If he's one of the good ones, there won't be a problem. If he's a wrong'un, it will be easier to see the signs, especially if he's resistive.

Good advice.

I know that I would have rebelled against it at 18.

It's hard to say. My parents met at these ages and are still together 45 plus years on. Some 18 year olds are more mature than others, whereas others are at risk of being taken advantage of. Not sure what the blowjob has got to do with it or why you felt the need to include it in your post.
