Men getting 'the snip'

We are late 30's and early 40's with no kids. We both decided this years ago as it just didn't fit what either of us wanted to do. We have used condoms / been careful as I have never like hormonal contraception for the couple of months I've tried it.

I guess the option has always been there but now where we are at an age where we really don't want any surprises we have talked about my hubby going for the snip. He was not really too keen on the idea initially but seems to be coming round to thinking it may be a good idea. Any others in similar situation? Do most men go for the snip at a certain point? Any side effects or advice. Assume he would still ejaculate the same just without the swimmers? Any effect on sex drive at all?

(Male) Had the snip late 30's after a few children so can't comment without children. Far easier sexually. I gained what appeared to be a small side effect without knowing for certain it was due to that, could be coincidental. Ejaculate the same, same sex drive

It’s his choice really, not a “joint “ decision , he has to be totally sure he doesn’t want to father any children now with you, or in a few years time (if the current relationship breaks down, with another woman

It took a little while for my husband to come round to the idea, but I am a few years older than him and when we first went for a discussion with a doctor she sort of put him off, as she told him to think carefully about whether there could be a possibility of a future where he might still want to be fertile.

Actually then COVID hit so operations got halted anyway. By the time they started up again he'd come round to the idea and he had it done.

No difference at all in sex afterwards, he just walked a bit gingerly for a few days and he wore pyjama bottoms!

It's meant to be painless but it was very painful having it done. I wasnt there but he says he screamed and the doctor had to give him more injections than normal!

I had snip late 30's under local anaesthetic. No issues.
Post Op the "scrotal support" became my best friend for a day or two....didn't want my dangly bits dangling!

Now, many years later, it has proved "liberating." 😉

I've had the snip. As above there's a couple of days discomfort and all else works as it should.

Yorkieboy · 12/11/2024 11:03

Had mine late 30's, was told it wasn't too painful. It was really painful but someone at work had one around the same time and had it done differently and he said his was less painful.
Did I regret it the few days after when it they were bruised and very sore yes I did. Do I regret having it done now. No.

My DH had it done after he found out that it was a far easier operation than sterilising me. He didn't drive for a few days, getting in and out of the car was the difficult part.
Less stick stuff for a while. Very liberating, gave us a new enthusiasm.

It is his choice, his body, rather than a joint decision.
It certainly takes away the worry of an accident happening.

As others, had this done when we decided we didn’t want anymore children, no issues following it, not sure how I would have felt if we had no children though as it’s a pretty final thing and none of us know what might happen in the future

DH had snip in his mid 30s after having our 2 kids. Few days discomfort but otherwise no side effects, everything works as it should. Def liberating not worrying about contraception anymore.

HuskerD · 12/11/2024 20:25

I had it done, went private for the no-scalpel method as it has fewer side effects and no downtime. No pain, very easy procedure. Everything else has been the same

I had a vasectomy at the tender age of 24, having decided I didn't want children. The Marie Stopes Clinic performed the op, but were quite reluctant, because they thought that I would change my mind. I never regretted the decision and none of my partners have ever had a problem with it - in fact, it's precisely the opposite.
