Contraception when on HRT over 50

New partner - both out of the game for a while (10 years for me divorced), 4 years for him ( widowed on the pill) I’m female and 50 - been on HRT for 10 years.

Have no idea if I have ‘gone through the menopause or not’ unlikely to come off HRT.

Past contraception has been pill (didn’t get on with it very well), condoms (have some reactions to some of them), injection - no main issue but not sure I can have this with hrt, coil - hated every sodding second and just a no.

He will do whatever he’s 53.

Pregnancy Is just a massive no just no so no risk etc

what are our options here?

Have you stopped having periods yet? I think the chances of a natural pregnancy at 50 is as close to zero as you can get (though no doubt has has happened to someone, somewhere).

I don’t know 🤷‍♀️ I’ve been on HRT for 10 years - femoston 2/10 so a breakthrough bleed every month

Its recommended we use contraception until 55.

Condoms would be my choice i your situation.

OfcourseitsaNC · 18/05/2024 09:43

I'm 48. I've been on hrt for a year. I've just come off the pill, as I wasn't getting on with it. Haven't had a period in over a year.

My FWB is very good at controlling himself, so we're going to use the withdrawal method.

mybeesarealive · 18/05/2024 14:13

Ask him to get the snip.

PinotPony · 18/05/2024 15:41

I'm 50 and at a recent ultrasound the radiographer said I still had a few very large follicles and could still be at risk of pregnancy. So although it's unlikely, it's not a risk I'd want to take.

Have you considered a coil? Would do you for the next 5 years until you're past menopause.

Can’t do the coil.

Ummm bollocks - will speak to the GP - injection might not be suitable.

Umm 🤔 he would I was hoping for the sake of a couple of years or a blood test we might be able to get away with it. We talked about it last night. Bollocks. He is happy with condoms, getting the snip or anything. We both agree at 50 plus we don’t want any children and don’t want the risk either.

@OfcourseitsaNC very risky

I'd never consider it with my ex or if I was younger.

But knowing him, added into my age and his physical reaction to condoms means it's the least worst option.

The progesterone only pill is recommended for women over 50 and you can take it with HRT.
I had an issue taking the regular pill as I struggled to tolerate the hormones. But the mini pill suits me.

I've just come off the mini pill. Fine for the first 2 years. I then had spotting for 6 months and a horrible vaginal odour. I stopped 2 weeks ago. Discharge back to normal and smell has gone.

What about the implant? That's what I use. Had no issues, just needs changing every 3 years, which I don't like, but apart from that, all good. I'm 49

millymoo1202 · 20/05/2024 13:32

I was told by gynaecologist that only options if coil is a no is
mini pill, implant or injection. Coil was great for me as hrt and contraceptive but had to be taken out for other reasons. I had implant after kids and was great. I’m same as you 52 and on hrt so no idea if I’m right through 😫

MiddleAgedDread · 21/05/2024 15:06

There’s info on the Balanced website about this, I was reading it recently as I’m in a similar situation to yourself although I’ve only been on HRT for just over a year and was having regular periods until then so assume I’ve not reach menopause yet. We’ve gone down the condoms route even though it feels like the risk of getting pregnant would be tiny, it’s not worth it, but I might investigate other options next time I have a HRT review (have previously had a mirena and definitely won’t be doing that again!!)

He said it’s easy to do and a quick recovery and that way I don’t need to mess around with my hormones etc he has private healthcare and has an appointment booked next week. Going together.
