The male ‘snip’

SaraS12 · 01/05/2024 02:48

Hubby and I are discussing him getting a vasectomy. I’ve read that he will still ejaculate but it won’t contain any sperm - which is confusing as I thought ejaculate was sperm…

My question is whether hun having the op will make a noticeable difference to his… performance, whether it’ll make any difference for me and how long he might be out of action.

Any responses or lived experiences welcome.

When I had mine, I did not drive for a few days, tractor type machine, bumpy. Car ok next day.
Sex after a few days I think, but a bit careful at first.
Much reduced ejaculate, Ejaculate is tadpoles and carrier fluid. (Tadpoles) the sperm from testicles and carrier fluid from prostate gland.
Over time prostate recovered and fluid came back. But I had other Prostate troubles later.
We carried on with other contraception for 3 months.

No difference to erection or feeling at climax.
Another ageing effect in 40 yr old men can be dryness under foreskin. Dribbling some of your saliva on to it will be sufficient.
Best of luck, You will notice if you give up other forms of contraception, No hormonal treatments, probably lose a little weight. My DW became more relaxed, gave us a new sex life.

Yes ejaculate contains sperm, but is mostly just semen, basically fluid. When sperm is no longer "in the mix" I doubt anyone would notice!

I was always considered "a heavy cummer" and still am post vasectomy, so I hope that answers one of your questions.

Psychologically, it's liberating. If you like bareback as a couple and enjoy the mess (😉) the added knowledge there's no pregnancy worries really frees you up to play as you both wish ..... As the male, I've no regrets.

Ps: had a bit of groin pain on and off for a month or so post surgery, but nothing since....10+ years now.

Sperm makes up only a very small part of the fluid ejaculated at orgasm.
I had the snip 5years ago and have noticed no changes in the volume of ejaculate or performance.
The surgery was very quick and pain-free. I've had worse experiences at the dentist.
There is a non scalpel method which I had.
To be honest I'm not sure why men are so fearful of it. Your partner can enjoy sex more knowing there's no chance of pregnancy and not have to taken hormonal birth control.

I had it 2yrs ago, I don't regret it, really it was the least I could do! I have since developed a retractile testicle which is annoying but not something which will particularly affect my life. It could have been coincidence and nothing to do with the op, I'll never know, I don't believe it's usually any kind of a side effect. Everything else normal I would say

As previous posters have said, removing the chance of getting pregnant makes things noticeably better. I always doubled up on contraception but since my partner had the snip sex has been much more enjoyable for both of us. Not just because of the lack of condoms, but the pycological effect of knowing this contraption isn't going to fail.
"Performance" wise I've not noticed any real changes in his output. He was tender in that area for a few weeks but nothing super uncomfortable.

Thanks everyone. Plenty to discuss with Hubby. I agree that removing the chance of getting pregnant will be a big relief - and I’ve always struggled with the pill / condoms etc.

Is a balance. I have known a couple of guys had it and had complications resulting from weeks off work and being very delicate....in the main from infection it sounded like. Despite what is said, apparently 10% result in "complications" and it is surgery. Having said that if you are both young then prob worth the risk.

An ex had had the snip and I couldn't tell any difference from what he ejaculated....seemed to be a lot if honest so nothing noticeable

I did wonder if it might be less ‘messy’ afterwards, but sounds like that’s not the case.

There is nothing to support 10% complications. The NHS website is VERY clear on this. It is much, much less than 10%.

https://www.nhs.uk/contraception/methods-of-contraception/vasectomy-male-sterilisation/complications/

This is a quote from a medial research paper which looked at 16,000 procedures
"Post-operative side effects were few and significant complications were reported in 0.9%."

https://bjui-journals.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/abs/10.1111/j.1464-410X.1984.tb06161.x

I had it over 20 years ago and have no regrets. A few days of tenderness then a few week later, after the all clear, I was "bak in the saddle".

Ejaculations as normal just no swimmers to get you pregnant. I think I was told to Ejaculations around 15-20 times before sending a sample back to make sure its been successful and safe for no condom.

A 'no mess' option would actually be great!
