Retrograde ejaculation/dry orgasm

My husband had this today and I'm a bit worried. He tells me he climaxed today. He certainly physically seemed to enjoy himself and peaked as he usually does. He seemed satisfied, exactly as he would if he'd ejaculated.

I never knew this was even a thing. He has and does have occasional stints of ED, where we use Viagra when needed. Lately he's not need this and the frequency of sex is increasing (it's still not a lot, maybe once or twice a month. I'd like as I have a high sex drive but I'm working on slowly increasing intimacy and frequency).

We're passed the children stage so it doesn't as actually matter but it seems a bit odd that this is happening. Is this a thing, is it ok, does it mean anything? He's early 50s, in good health, no diabetes or heart issues.

Encourage your husband to speak to his GP about it. A urine sample will determine if it’s retrograde. It’s likely nothing to worry about as you aren’t trying to conceive, but your GP can advise if further investigations are necessary.

Highly doubt it’s retro, this would have been picked up years ago.
Could well be dry ( age related) , or he is faking his orgasm ( I’ve done this) if he knows he cannot get there, possibly because he is having sex that he doesn’t really want to have as you are increasing the frequency to a level he doesn’t want/ like

Retrograde Ejaculation is a thing and he should be checked out by the GP. It could be an enlarged prostate. In which case a referral to a urologist.

Retro is only a problem is TTC, otherwise it’s a non issue and the treatment is not worth the risk ( bladder surgery) .

he might need a prostate checked

mrandmrsrobinson · 14/01/2024 12:38

The prostate when enlarged squeezes the tubes that allow blood and sperm to the penis. So with an enlarged prostate the signs could be lack of erection and lack of sperm at ejaculation. No matter what the age of the person or whether trying to TTC or not.
A prostate check is of utmost importance.

@nameForThis99 you’re being a little quick to dismiss. The sudden onset of not being able to ejaculate is not a ‘non issue’ to the person experiencing it! Also, retrograde may be caused by certain medications, such as those used for allergies, so could be a new symptom in midlife.

I know someone who had this as one of his first symptoms of MS. He didn’t realise til much later when other symptoms started. It should always be checked by a GP, it’s irresponsible to say it’s a non issue.

No, not really, retro is not problem with not being able to ejaculate, just that it goes into the bladder rather than out the regular external exit, and is then expelled with urine.

The OP says they are beyond child age so TTC doesn’t matter, the treatment for retro is normally an operation on the bladder that has its own complications, most older men will be advised to do nothing about this as per current NHS guidelines

Ejaculation problems

Ejaculation problems such as premature, delayed and retrograde ejaculation are a common cause of sexual problems in men.

I appreciate your information @nameForThis99 . I apologise for using confusing language when I said ‘not being able to ejaculate’. I meant an amount of semen coming out of the penis.

This man needs to see his GP to ascertain the cause of his symptoms. If it’s retrograde then you’re correct, no further action is required. But complacency could be harmful.

Wherearemymarbles · 14/01/2024 15:48

Unless the ops partner is on medication or has had surgery then the other the remaining underlying causes of retrograde ejaculation all relate to nerve damage and will need investigation.

if it happens again he should see a gp

He certainly needs to see a GP, but not as urgently as say blood in his semen or urine, both of which would need more urgent investigation.

Mermaidparades · 14/01/2024 16:07

@nameForThis99 if this were my DP,(who is in a similar age bracket)I would ask him to contact the surgery in the morning.

@motherofkevinnotperry i hope your husband is ok.

motherofkevinnotperry · 14/01/2024 17:16

What if this only happens sometimes but other times he can and does ejaculate. It's never happened before, he didn't fake it. I don't think he could fake the physical hardening that happens when he climaxes. Does he still need to get checked? He doesn't know I'm asking about this because I don't want to cause him anxiety due to his history of ED. He doesn't seem bothered about it. I'm tempted to wait and see if it happens again before I discuss it with him.

@motherofkevinnotperry
if he is not having other issues like blood in his semen / urine / lower back pain etc , then I wouldn’t raise it at the moment, take a look at the NHS article I posted earlier

IF he has not had a prostate check within the last 5 years it might be worth floating that idea

This happens to DP sometimes. Never thought anything of it. I guess if it happened all the time it might be more concerning.
