Fed up with hormones!

Hi so I've been on and off all sorts of contraceptive pills my whole life. I was on the mini pill but came off and then I became my old self and it actually gave me the confidence to leave my dead end relationship. Trouble is I went back on the mini pill for pregnancy protection with others, and whilst me and the ex are breaking up I'm now having doubts and lost my spunk due to these bloody pills , so I wanna come off but I need protection that's not a condom btw so please don't suggest. Now I'm looking at doing the copper IUD but I've also heard good things about the other IUD; a lower hormone one (sorry don't know the name)..... however, mini pill is also low hormone... so am I just easily effected by hormones and not even bother with this other IUD as it may just fuck me like the mini pill?
If anyone has had experience with both these contraceptives please please let me know so I can know if they're very different or not , please help! Ta x

OP, l note that you are not interested in condoms, but may l ask the reason? I’m asking as a woman in her 40s who does not get on with hormonal contraception and who unashamedly carries condoms in her handbag.

If you are going to enjoy new encounters with others, regardless of the contraceptive method used, condoms will add that extra protection. Sexual health is so important.

Just like preference, I mean if I am going around the houses so to say then I will buy one particular and frequent sexual partner I have I don't have to cause they're safe, also think condoms would be a struggle as they struggle with the blood flow down there.
So, you tried lots of contraceptives? Have you ever tried any of the IUDs or the mini pill and if so how would you compare them?
Thank you!

I’ve was on the pill in my teens, later the mini pill both sent my hormones all over the show. Aside from that, looking at others, sister had the injection and had significant side effects and a good friend gave birth with a coil fitted and prior to her pregnancy, obviously unplanned, had dreadful periods.

l can’t remember when l last had sex with a man without a condom. It’s not ideal, but it’s best for me. To be candid, l can put them on with my mouth. x

Yeah I've heard the copper coil can cause bad bleeding, apparently the mirena coil is better for this but I'm worried the hormones in that will just cause me the same problems at the pop pill etc...
Oo sounds good, unfortunately it's not quite good enough no matter what I use to get it going x

I have never got on with hormones so I had a copper coil for years before we tried for a baby. After our one and only child was born, my husband had a vasectomy so I never had a coil put back in.

The bleeding settles down and it's worth it imo. The first period was pretty bad but they gradually got better over the first year, though they remained relatively long while the coil was in.

I'd honestly recommend it.

Thank you that's really helpful, I'm either thinking that or the mirena one as apparently that one lets the hormone out slowly around the body instead of the mini pill that like explodes it is what I've heard. Have you tried any other coils?

@LilNic13

The mirena is hormonal so I didn't go near it, just the copper coil. I no longer need birth control but if I did, I would have another copper fitted. The mirena also needs replacing every 5 years but the copper can stay in a lot longer.

I have a Levosert coil - same dose as the Mirena. I've got on with it better than any of the pills - I do t have to remember to take it and the hormonal dose is lower as it's already in the uterus. Plus no periods is a bonus.

I didn't go for the copper coil as it can make heavy periods worse which i definitely didn't want

Also Mirena has now had its license extended to 8 years for contraceptive purposes

It took me a long time to find a pill that agreed with me but I was then on it for several years. I had to come off it last year as I was getting migraines.
Initially used condoms but current BF can’t wear them and I don’t love them either.
Went with the copper coil, only had it fitted two weeks ago so early days.
Bit painful to have fitted (apparently normal if you’ve not had kids before), I had some light spotting for 3 or 4 days afterwards but that was it. I have quite light periods anyway so I have taken a gamble on how much impact it will have on those. Hoping it does the trick 🤞

Okay amazing thank you, yeah I'm tempted to try that first and leave the copper coil as last result as I've heard periods are much better on the other coils , hopefully the hormones don't effect me, it doesn't seem to take a lot to effect me but pills are strong with it, even the low dose ones

Aw hope it works out then I'm definitely considering it but maybe try another first but hopefully it's okay, they are all different for all women too so good to try them out and see how I go

There are also kyleena and jaydess coils which have a lower dose of hormone in than mirena. Even with Mirena the amount getting into your system is much lower than if you take the pill
