What are fat women supposed to use as contraception?

Feeling very frustrated.

I'm apparently too overweight for Microgynon.

I tried Cezerette, and it made me depressed. I tried Norgeston, and it made me bleed non-stop, to the point where I ended up anaemic.

I'd ask for sterilisation, but I doubt I'd get one on the NHS due to not having had children.

I've heard horror stories on MN about getting the coil removed, and it's put me off completely. Plus, if I react badly to the coil or the implant, it means I won't be able to immediately stop the cause of the symptoms.

I could get Microgynon by lying about my weight, but I'm not sure lying is the correct solution.

So... what do other women do?

I had the Copper Coil removed last month after 8 years and it hurt like a mother fucker. I wrote a thread about it.

I then fainted in the corner shop afterwards.

Since having it removed I have lost 9cm from my waist.

That thing was causing 2 weeks of bleeding for years it never calmed down and made me constantly bloated and moody.

dementedpixie · 10/02/2023 19:49

Nuvaring will also not be suitable as it is a combined contraceptive and not advised if you're overweight

This sounds horrendous, and I'm so sorry you went through that.

Being completely blase, if I ended up losing 9 cm from my waist, maybe they'd bloody well give me the combined pill after all!

I'm overweight and have the Depo injection

JenniferBooth · 10/02/2023 20:10

@toofatforthis Im 49 and child free by choice. Numerous GPs refused to refer me for sterilisation when i asked during my 20s and early 30s. Am now on the mini pill with no fucking idea where i am perimenopause/menopause wise with my periods or whether they have stopped natually or the mini pill has stopped them.

Osteria · 10/02/2023 21:37

@dementedpixie yes I got that.

However, OP has phrased it as if it’s THE only other option, even suggesting lying to get it which is obviously dangerous.

The tone is entitled.

Follycastle · 10/02/2023 21:46

Second the suggestion to go to a specialist family planning clinic so they can talk you through all options available to you. I have never, in my 15 years of using various contraception, gone via my GP. My coil was inserted and removed, both pain free, by a consultant gynaecologist based at my local clinic.

<sigh> I'm obviously not going to lie to get it. But it's currently the only option for getting a contraceptive I know will work for me, and I want a better option than making shit up, because it's dangerous to play with your health in that way.

As for entitled, I feel that I am entitled to some type of contraception that doesn't make me feel depressed or bleed non-stop. I'm not exaggerating about bleeding for a month on the mini pill.

@Follycastle I know you weren't the first to suggest it, but I think this is probably where I'm ending up. Given my GP is saying to lose weight and come back in a year, you're right, I need to consult someone else.

I honestly don't know about the hormones / pill issue but I'm on my 4th implant and it's worked brilliantly for me. And no effect on fertility when removed.

Can I ask how visible it is, and if it's caused any scarring?

Patches like Evra are great- they are hormonal but you can just take it off it it doesn't agree with you.
They can get a little bit fluffy by the end of the week depending on where you wear it, but I love them.

Mine was visible for a week whrn it was unseasonably hot and people did ask if i was giving up smoking as they resemble nicotine patches

Cotswoldmama · 10/02/2023 22:52

I've got the copper coil as I wanted something hormone free and long term. It was quite painful to have put in but not for very long and it lasts 10 years. My periods have remained basically the same, maybe slightly lighter but no more painful than usual and last the same length of time. It's great, basically I don't know it's there and I don't have to worry about getting pregnant.

Hercisback · 10/02/2023 22:53

The coil is fine. If there was an absolutely perfect no side effect contraceptive, we'd all be on it. Time to find one that suits you.

Luredbyapomegranate · 10/02/2023 22:56

Coil. Removal has always been fine. It’s the only equivalent of the pill really so I’d do that. Although what about the mini pill?

Rainbowshit · 10/02/2023 23:02

Just a warning about the implant. My sister had it and they couldn't find it to remove it I think because of her weight.

LondonSouth28 · 11/02/2023 00:30

What @lmnabc says!

B1rd · 11/02/2023 00:34

I think you really need to speak to a professional who is able to give you correct advice for your cicumstsnces.

Maybebabyno2 · 11/02/2023 03:59

Ah well, I can't take any pull due to mal absorption so count yourself lucky you have a couple options left to explore there.

I am currently pregnant but will be having the copper coil fitted after, it's non hormonal and the insertion/removal process will be quick. If you have had piercings or tattoos, I imagine they are worse.

She can’t use the patch if her BMI is too high for Microgynon. The patch is a combined contraceptive and they are all contraindicated with a BMI >35 (or a BMI>30 with other risk factors for cardiovascular disease). All oestrogen containing contraceptives are out for the same reason Microgynon is which is the risk of cardiovascular disease and blood clots- this means all of the combined pills, the patch and the nuva ring.

BirdsCustardPowder · 11/02/2023 08:41

You can use a diaphragm/cervical cap at the same time as condoms.

Snarf23 · 11/02/2023 08:44

I don’t like hormonal contraceptives sow eve used condoms for 12 years. No accidents or splits etc and no pregnancies either. Been perfect for us and I don’t have to crap into my body I don’t need!

Sunshineandrainbow · 11/02/2023 08:47

Copper coils have been a dream for me. Current one in for 10 years. Both daughters have it too.

FatSealSmugSoup · 11/02/2023 08:52

I’ve got a mirena. It was horrendously painful going in and I needed a local anaesthetic. I’ve not had a vaginal birth so my cervix has never opened. In fact, it refused to allow the coil string to hang through and sucked it back up into my uterus.

Now they won’t remove it because it’ll require a GA because JCB won’t lend them the tools required to manually excavate - and of course they won’t give me a GA because of my weight.

Now that I’m old, I find my face works as a pretty good contraception.

monitor1 · 11/02/2023 08:55

How terrible. Your GP/reproductive health clinic has taken a holistic view of your health and is up to date with guidelines which say that the risk of blood clots is too high over a certain weight, so they are acting to protect your health and offering you all the other available contraceptives. Shocking stuff. They should just give you the pill. I'm sure you/your family wouldn't sue if you were harmed/died from a blood clot.

Is it a surprise that HCPs are leaving the NHS in droves?

If the OP has a BMI over 35 then the FP clinic should also refuse to prescribe. Risks outweigh the benefits at that point.
