Contraception at almost 49

Hi all don’t know if this is the right place. In a new relationship and using condoms but want to go on pill. Been on it before and found it killed libido. So I know my partner is clean. What are the chances of getting pregnant at almost 49? Research tells me hardly any. Anyone offer advice

It's a non zero chance though isn't it? How would you feel if you became pregnant?

jojogoesbust · 07/01/2023 18:46

Definitely would not want a baby. Neither would he lol

So why take that chance? What about a copper coil? It's non hormonal.

SpanishGoatFlower · 07/01/2023 19:06

I have the mirena coil which helps with hrt provision. No periods with the coil so a bonus.

Maybe best to discuss with your doctor.

jojogoesbust · 07/01/2023 19:19

Thanks I had the mirena coil a while ago. And did well. I will attempt to speak to the gp. I understand there is a waiting list for the coil

"The current guidelines are that if you are under 50 years of age then you should use contraception for at least two years, following your last menstrual period. If you are over 50 years, then you should use contraception for at least one year following your last menstrual period."

Not sure where you're at re peri menopause/menopause, but the above if from the Newson Health Website.

Tallguy101 · 07/01/2023 21:05

Don’t risk it, go to your GP and discuss the options which include the coil, injections, implants etc

Zanatdy · 07/01/2023 21:58

You might find in a new relationship it won’t kill your libido. It has with me before but at 46 I’m on the mini pill and have a new bf and it’s definitely not killed my libido, I can’t get enough of him

jojogoesbust · 08/01/2023 06:59

Thanks all for replies. I will call gp tomorrow and hopefully discuss

Why doesn't he get the snip (vasectomy) I had it done, simple job, was in & out of doctors within half hr.

I agree with this. Our family was complete and Lady Gawain could not use hormonal contraception for medical reasons so I had a vasectomy. Simple procedure and I (we) have never regretted it.

newnamefortonight · 17/01/2023 21:37

I am 48, and on mini pill mainly to stop the pain from erratic periods. No libido probs at all.

arcencielpoisson · 17/01/2023 23:06

What are the changes of pregnancy?

STD still a risk though...

She can hardly ask her new partner to have a vasectomy!

dementedpixie · 18/01/2023 13:43

I would try the mini pill as it's OK until age 55

jojogoesbust · 18/01/2023 16:51

Thank you! Finally have a GP appointment next week

Because it's a surgical procedure and it's permanent? OP says it's a new relationship, who knows how long it'll last (hopefully a long time). It's a bit unfair to suggest a new partner makes themselves permanently infertile. Should a man ask a new female partner to get sterilised as contraceptive solution? Can't imagine that going down very well.

Glad the vasectomy went well for you, but it can have some long term side effects - pains that never go away.
