Post menopausal and sex!

13 replies

Runaround50 · 13/08/2022 12:51

Didn't think about it for years. A massive drop in hormones saw to that and was as dry as sandpaper!

Now, 4 years on, it's ALL I can think about.
Solo orgasms have been delightful.
I want OH's fingers and tongue all the damm time and constantly want to cum.
I want sex toys ( another thread).
We want to watch sexy films.

What an earth is going on ??
We have teens, so it's not easy!

Plus, it's a huge distraction ( got a million jobs to do around the house !)

Oh well, the power of hormones! 😀

(feel free to move to menopause board if more appropriate)

@notlongtoo Great reply, thanks!
I agree, we can crack on for a while yet.
It just surprised me, that is all.
Hormones appear to dictate right now (except I have none, which makes it very odd!)

What a fantastic turn of events, @Runaround50
It's good to buck the trend. The fluctuating hormones can do this but so can histamine intolerance (look it up to see if you have other symptoms that relate to this). Either way, it's a lovely bonus for you & DH.
Re the dryness, yes lube +++ will help, but also consider replacing your hormones with HRT if you think it's appropriate. There are many health benefits (reduced risks of dementia, diabetes & bone problems). You could also ask the GP about vaginal oestrogen cream which maintains the health of the vagina & prevents future problems with atrophy & urinary issues.
Enjoy your new found distraction - I bet hubby thinks all his Christmases & birthdays have come at once 😉

@Whatliesbeneath707 what a lovely reply, thanks 😀
Yes, most definitely a shift in hormones, which has created havoc.
I am actually on HRT and was thinking it wasn’t working. Now, I’m considering the possibility that it actually is! It’s been a slow old processes getting there though.

The new found distraction is ace; except the decorating has fallen to the back of the queue! 😆

Ha ha....the decorating can certainly wait. Needs must & all that. 😂 Enjoy every minute!

Before your most recent post I was going to ask if you were on HRT? I've heard that It can have the effect of increasing libido sometimes dramatically.

My wife has been going through the menopause the past 3-4 years and has had various of the commonly associated symptoms including loss of libido.

The other symptoms have become less frequent but her lack of general interest in sex has continued, although we both still enjoy sex which she's happy to have when I'm in the mood and when she'll still have occasional orgasms.

So it's not a major "no sex any more" crisis. But she is wondering if her previous sex drive will ever return. She spoke to her doctor when the other symptoms were severe and HRT was discussed. Then the symptoms eased - apart from lack of libido - so she didn't pursue it.

So we don't know whether to "sit it out" and see if her sex drive does return, just accept and adapt to how it is now, or pursue HRT.

I realise there is a MN menopause comments board which I might also post on. But my question is specifically to do with sex and the current thread prompted me to ask it.

Go for it, by the way! Definitely agree with the pp that the decorating can wait!

@Saturdaymorningsaregreat Okay, so as you know, normally HRT would be prescribed to try and tackle menopause symptoms which impinge on daily life. It CAN help with libido though, but you have to be on the right dose. I'm on a medium dose Oestrogen patch and libido has increased, as has quality of orgasm. Prior to that, I was on a tablet and my bits had withered to nothing!

I would suggest that your wife either pursues systemic HRT, or local oestrogen pessaries and cream at the very least. These can help keep the vagina and surrounding areas, supple and healthy. Vagifem and Ovestin are the ones to ask for.

If, once on systemic HRT, her libido is still a bit lacking, then she can request a referral to a menopause specialist and ask for testosterone. It's not licenced for women via the Gp, but a specialist can prescribe for low libido. Testogel, Tostron or Androfemme ( i think ).

😉

All excellent advice 😆
@Saturdaymorningsaregreat One thing worth knowing with HRT is that oestrogen needs to be replaced first and at the correct levels, before testosterone is started. Otherwise, the testosterone will be converted to oestrogen.
There is lots of evidence now that says all women should be able to have HRT, if they want it, as it can protect from various other diseases occurring (see above) but it should relieve the awful symptoms (brain fog, tiredness, hot flushes....the list is long).
If we compare this hormone deficiency to all the others that we might get (thyroid hormones, insulin in diabetes etc), we wouldn't expect the person to struggle on without these vital hormones, so why do we expect them to cope without oestrogen, progesterone & testosterone?
I will stop harping on now - you can probably tell I feel passionately about women having HRT if they want it 😊
Anyway, a 3 month trial of HRT is worth a go, as long as there are no contraindications. It can always be discontinued if it can't be tolerated.

Runaround50 · 15/08/2022 10:08

@Whatliesbeneath707 agree 100%!
The thing is, there are Oestrogen receptors in just about every part of the body. I would definitely recommend HRT trial @Saturdaymorningsaregreat, you and your wife might be pleasantly surprised! ❤️

Have to say though, I can hardly keep up with myself at the moment, let alone my partner! Maybe it's the heat! And as for the decorating....
