Sex causing UTI’s

Probably could have posted in health but it’s a bit embarrassing.

Almost every time I have sex more than once in a night/morning I end up getting a UTI. I have a pretty high sex drive so this is kind of slowing me down (and at times making me very unwell). Been dating someone new, things moved up a notch a couple days ago and today I am unwell (came on very suddenly, needing to pee every few minutes and in agony). Last time it happened I was passing blood within a hour of the first symptom, I was worried so got tested for STD’s (all was clear). Any ideas why it’s happening and how to prevent it?

If you are prone to UTIs then always pee after sex. What kind of sex are you having? I ask because if there is anal contact followed by vaginal contact, then some unpleasant bacteria can be introduced into your urinary tract.

I tend to pee straight after, I heard peeing before and after is good?

No annal, maybe too much 4play?

I have now taken some over the counter stuff and it seems to be a bit better, I don’t want to have to keep getting antibiotics but last time it was really bad (after quite a lot of sex).

Peeing before and after helps.

Extra lube helps, even if you think you're wet enough. Proper lube - no scented oils & such.

Avoid bathing - showers only.

I am prone to sex-related UTIs & am in a new relationship. I find some foreplay/afterplay seems to make it more likely - prolonged fingering especially & also using a dildo on my G-spot. Sorry if TMI Smile

I find keep in some of the cystitis powders & take one or two if I notice even a slight hint of a problem which will mostly nip it in the bud.

*garbled last sentence - you know what I mean!

Also some GPs will supply antibiotics so you can take a single dose on the days you have sex - works as a preventitive.

Check out D Mannose - I now take one every night at bedtime and 3 after sex. No UTIs since I've been on it.

EllieFredrickson · 06/07/2018 06:16

I used to get this. Agree with a wee before and after and washing after - I just pour 3 jugs down there will sitting on the loo Blush. Also use lube - I never have sex without it. I use sensilube. Touch wood this routine stoped my issues.

Lovemusic33 · 06/07/2018 06:16

Thank you. Will look at D Mannose. It does seem to happen when there has been more foreplay. The last man I was seeing was useless at foreplay and I didn't get any problems whilst seeing him.

I have woken with the UTI symptoms this morning. I will tale some more of the powder and maybe take a couple antibiotics as I have some left over from last time, hopefully it will clear up.

Love that last bit about having some left over after last time - you should finish the course as prescribed - perhaps the symptoms improved but the infection was still lurking.

PussGirl · 06/07/2018 11:21

FWIW Val, UTI is one of the few infections where stopping treatment when the symptoms go is okay.

For simple cystitis. Not for more serious kidney infections.

PussGirl Whenever I've had AB for a UTI, I've been told to finish the treatment.

From NHS Choices

Treating UTIs

Your doctor or nurse may prescribe antibiotics to treat a UTI.

Once you start treatment, the symptoms should start to clear up within 5 days in adults and 2 days in children.

It's important to finish the whole course of antibiotics, even if you start to feel better.

PussGirl · 06/07/2018 18:58

Fair enough.

Not necessarily true though, but it can be dangerous giving patients a little autonomy Smile

Also typical UTI treatment length in UTIs in women (unless recurrent) is 3 days. 5-7 otherwise & usually 5 in children & 7 in men.

UTIs often start to clear within 24 hours (faster than other things) because the antibiotic travels to the bladder in the bloodstream & also is excreted in the urine, so a double whammy.

Don't believe everything you read on the NHS websites.

Thank you, have spent the day taking antibiotics and drinking loads, symptoms are almost gone, symptoms were not as bad as last time (I was peeing blood), last time I was given ten days of antibiotics but stopped taking them after 5 as UTI had gone and the antibiotics were making me ill.

Absolutely worth seeing GP. Are you menopausal? If so could be vaginal walls thinning And if so GP can prescribe hormone cream. I had a series of UTIs a few years ago and was prescribed post coital single low dose of antibiotics and it works a treat Smile
