Contraception help!!!

Needing to decide what contraception to go on after having DC2.

I was previously on the mini pill but I am absolutely rubbish at taking it reliably and I'm really not wanting a happy accident.

Previous to that I had the implant but eventually had it taken out as my mood was so low and I bled all the time.

I can't take anything with oestrogen in it

I'm thinking of either the copper or mirena coil - has anyone had experience with this? The thought of it going in makes me feel a bit Shock and I've heard negatives about both of them.

Any other suggestions?

We have been using condoms here as we want more children. Once we are done he is having the snip.
I dont necessarily agree with putting fake hormones through your body or putting foreign objects in for long periods.

Armygirl · 27/01/2018 07:49

I’ve not had either of these coils but I’m a sexual health nurse and learning to fit coils.
Copper coil contains no hormones and can stay in for 10 years. It can make your periods a little heavier and longer so not particularly recommended if you already have heavy periods.
The Mirena coil can stay in for 5 years, contains progesterone and bleeding will be lighter and may stop altogether but is common to take up to 3-6 months for bleeding to stop.
Ask away and I’ll try to help if I can

Hi Sleep, I had a Jaydess coil fitted, I've not had kids and the insertion was uncomfortable for about 30 seconds (like you I was expecting MUCH worse Confused)

If that helps Smile

I've got got the mirena and it was easy to be put in and in terms of periods and pain it's great. I hardly bleed, no weight gain. But for months and months I had issues with thrush and I'd never had thrush once before. I went to the gynae doctor twice and they said there was no issue but treated me with broad spectrum antibiotics and thrush treatment and it's been fine for the last few months since. But on and off it went on for ages. Nothing ever came back on swab, I think the device just upset my natural ph. If it stays like it is now I'll keep it in but I've considered having it out many many times.

I've got a diaphragm for when I remove it.

Natural cycles app, www.naturalcycles.com/en/contraception

Why anyone would want to flood artificial hormones in their bodies is beyond me.

SirGawain · 27/01/2018 22:48

Natural cycles app
Sounds like a pretty reliable way to get pregnant!

SleepForTheWeek · 27/01/2018 23:09

@newnameneeded29 that's how DD2 was conceived 🙈

@Armygirl thank you. I can't decide which coil would be best, I like the idea of the hormone free one but not the heavy periods.

DH also looking into a vasectomy

I've had a copper coil since my first family planning appt after dd was born (16 next month) - I was in Spain where the doctor knows best and told me so in no uncertain terms! Have to say, I'd probably never have chosen it here in the UK where it's easier to question things, but it's worked a dream for me. Having it changed is a bit grim, but only for a few minutes, and then other than a quick fiddle monthly to check the strings are there you don't have to think about it for 5 or 10 years depending on the coil.

Sadik · 28/01/2018 13:01

I didn't find it made my periods heavier, btw.

SleepForTheWeek · 28/01/2018 13:51

Thanks @Sadik

How was the initial insertion?

I think I'm leaning towards the copper coil x

‘Sleep’ you can request anaesthesia if you’re worried about the insertion. some women have a gel, some have a cervical block (injection) and the majority find they don’t need anything

Sadik · 28/01/2018 14:11

Very Spanish, Sleep - it involved an alarming chair with stirrups - but given I'd not long had a baby, people shoving things up (and I suppose down) my fanjo was pretty routine.

The insertions I've had in the UK have been much more user-friendly. I wouldn't say it was greatly more unpleasant than a smear test, for example. (They suggest taking paracetamol beforehand which I have done.)

Sadik · 28/01/2018 14:13

Sorry, that should say 'suggested'

ShinyBadger · 28/01/2018 18:04

I have a mirena coil and had a cervical block with the second one. I could not fault it at all and definitely will be having a 3rd one when time is up!
I didnt feel the 1st one being removed and a short sharp intense period cramping with the second one being inserted that’s all.

SleepForTheWeek · 28/01/2018 21:31

Thanks everyone, makes me feel a bit more comfortable with it.

I don't mind smears actually, so maybe it wouldn't be too bad

What are the benefits of either coil?

OP posts:
Sadik · 28/01/2018 21:40

Copper coil - basically, not getting pregnant Grin

Advantages I guess are if you get along with it, no hormones (unlike mirena/pill/implant) and no faff / higher reliability (unlike cap / condoms).

Other than the obvious disadvantage for some of heavier periods / irregular bleeding, of course there's no protection against STDs (but sounds like you're in a long term relationship anyway) and there's a very small risk of ectopic pregnancy.

MissSophieB397 · 29/01/2018 17:58

I had the mirena and it was SO painful going in however I never had kids.

It was also painful for days after and I had to go up to the hospital to check it.

Around 6 months I had to have it taken out as my periods were every 1/2 weeks and lasted about 10 days, sometimes felt like I was constantly on a period and always feeling like it wasn't in right. I hated having sex also as I felt like it wasn't in properly.

I went to have it removed which didn't hurt and my body took at least 3/4 months to get back to a regular cycle etc. So I personally had a bad experience but my sister who has had kids loves it.

Everyone's different! 😊

SleepForTheWeek · 29/01/2018 21:05

Thanks @MissSophieB397 - was a lot of that because of the hormones or just because it was a coil?

OP posts:
MissSophieB397 · 30/01/2018 06:26

@SleepForTheWeek hormones I believe and the coil was also half way out when I had it removed, this can happen they said which is why it caused a lot of pain for me :)

weekendninja · 30/01/2018 09:11

I have the copper coil. Fitting was uncomfortable and I had cramping for the rest of the day and bleeding for a week or so.

For the first six months I had a day or so during my period where i was very heavy but to be honest it wasn't anything I couldn't deal with.

My body doesn't seem to cope with hormonal contraception well at all so for me the copper coil is perfect.
