If you can tolerate hormonal contraception, Mirena. Copper coil was a horrendous experience for me. Made my periods unbearably heavy and painful.

Thudercatsrule · 25/01/2018 22:04

I had the merina for 5 years and was perfectly happy, but when I had it had it put it again at 42 it was awful., mood swings and the most terrible acne. Doc wdnt remove it, so I had to do it myself 😔

Have copper coil for 3 yrs: heavy longer periods. Getting tired of these but wonder if mirena hormones affect those w some anx/depression/pmt?

Honey2468 · 04/02/2018 09:15

Copper coil was horrendous. Bled constantly but it was the pains which were the worst. I have been told several times that if I went for the mirena drs wouldn’t expect the women to see any benefit for at least a year and as a previous poster has stated drs can be refuse to remove them. Are other options out of the question for you ?

Hi, I have had mirena coil before (have a history of depression) and found myself slipping back into depression about six months after having it. I've always had problems with mood swings etc and hormones. Like another poster, I removed it myself.
I now have the copper coil and whilst my periods are heavier and longer (I'm late forties so my periods were getting lighter and shorter anyway) I am happy to put up with this rather than dealing with the mood swings and worry of depression returning. Emotions wise, I just have the usual "normal" PMT which is manageable. I suspect it is a personal choice and mine was depression or pregnancy vs. heavier periods. I made the right choice for me 😁

I had the copper coil put in three months ago and I love it. I have a period around every three weeks that is quite heavy but only lasts 2/3 days. It's regular. Worth it for the peace of mind.

I have a mirena coil and on the 2nd one :) love mine and I hope they will
Let me have a 3rd when this one ends next year.

But out of interest how did you two both remove your coils yourselves?

Bedsheets4knickers · 14/04/2018 09:05

Copper coil , heavy periods for 6 months but now settled down and are really light , no hormone and I don't need to think about it for 10 years 👍

I had the Mirena just coming up to four weeks ok. I'm hoping it will help with my anxiety, along with other peri-menopausal type symptoms. If it doesn't my GP said she'd be happy to take it out anytime - I did check after reading about GP's refusing to do so.

So far I'm happy - spotting still, but I've not had thrush yet which is a relief as I was getting it pretty much every month before my period and I did have a period but it was lighter than pre-Mirena. I know it's still early days, but I'm hoping I'll be one of those who it suits.

UndomesticHousewife · 18/04/2018 01:18

Why are gps refusing to take them out? Surely you have the right to have have something unwanted removed from inside your body!?

MiniTheMinx · 18/04/2018 10:52

Gps just seem to love theses Mirena coils. Mine tried to refuse to take it out.

Within a week I went from being happy, full of energy, slim, flat tummy to a depressed, bloated, lethargic winger who wanted to sit in a corner and cry. And the constant spotting of dark murky looking discharge effected how I felt about myself too. I felt constantly grubby. It was an excellent contraceptive, I never wanted sex and the constant spotting ensured I never had any.
