can I safely stop having periods?

I'm 47 and haven't reached menopause yet and I'm completely, utterly sick of having periods. I don't have problems with them but they interrupt my sex life and I could really do without them. So, I'd like to take or have something but I don't really need the contraceptive side of it, just the stopping AF bit. From what I've read some methods stop it and some seem to make it worse.
I've read on here about the implant, it can stop AF but can cause a million other problems. I don't fancy a coil, I'd hate to have it put in and removed for a start. What about the mini pill? I took it years and years ago but I can't remember if it stopped my AF or not!! Vaginal ring sounds a faff to put in take out etc.
Injections? But you have to go every 8 weeks or something, that's a lot of visits to the nurse!
I know everyone is different but has anyone used something that has an innocuous effect on their body but stops (or nearly stops) AF!

I've had no side effects from the implant so far. No periods, but i had PCOS anyways so they are quite rare.

Just invest in some dark towels or do it in the shower? :p

Depo is every 12 weeks, but my doctor has said I have to stop at age 45 :( Fucking gutted as I hate having periods and I barely have any spotting on Depo.

They might have said that because I've been on it for so long though (I think that will be 10 years.) You could try asking your GP.

My periods stopped with mirena, it's in place for up to 5 years and I understand it can be used during the menopause. I've never had children and am on my 4th one, insertion is a bit uncomfortable but no worse than a smear.

Mini pill can stop them. I have the mirena and that has stopped mine. Injection made me bleed lots and put on lots of weight.

Hensintheskirting · 13/06/2016 19:51

I went on the mini pill and had a period non stop for 3 months, at which point I stopped taking it because I'd had enough!

Injections stop them completely for me, the implant had the opposite effect and gave me pretty much continuous periods until I had it out. Depo injection is every 12 weeks (although I think I read about another one which is 8 weekly), I loved it.

I'm having a endometrial ablation along with my tubal ligation. 50% of those who one never get another period. Can't wait

LilyandGinger · 13/06/2016 19:58

Coil really isn't that bad. You might only need one, given your age. I'm on my second and have no periods at all.

What about using a soft cup or sea sponge?
