Where do you mums look for tutors?

After splitting with my ex H I have moved to a new area nearer to where I teach. I previously did a fair bit of private tuition mainly through word of mouth but now I need to build a base in my new area. SO I wanted to ask, if you were looking for a tutor where would you look? My card in the newsagents window didn't work this time. I tutor for GCSE maths, science, chemistry and AS/A2 chemistry. I am thinking I would probably get more uptake with the maths as I specialise in working with kids (girls in particular) who lack confidence with maths and C/D borderlines.

Any ideas?

I have looked in my local paper in the past[which was unsuccessful] and also have used an online agency, although I assume you would then have to pay them commission.

I have actually found it very difficult to find suitable tutors and am surprised your notice was not successful. My DD is at a comp. and I know quite a few of her friends have had tutors for various subjects at one time or another.

I would probably not ask the school unless my DD was really struggling or they suggested a tutor.

I send the DC to school to learn from their teachers. If they are falling behind then those self-same teachers would be the last people whom I would ask to tutor her.

I did need a tutor at one staqe - I phoned round all the local schools that (a) did the same examining board and (b) got the results, as evidenced by league tables. I pretended that I was asking about Sixth Form entry and managed to bypass admin and speak directly to the teachers.

As a teacher it is very common to be asked for reccomendations of tutors. If anyone sent us their details we stuck the leaflets in a special drawer to pass onto anyone who asked for info.
Village magazines are a good place, as is a leaflet drop around your area. Wait until september/October though obviously. You only need to get a couple for word of mouth to take over.
