chemistry gcse in 3 days where to start?

ds1 has decided he ought to start revising for wednesdays gcse chemistry OCR (4 5 6) the whole revision thing has been a long hard battle which has caused lots of friction

I printed off last years paper and he couldn't answer a single question!! Yes his own fault I know but I want to try and help him if I can. Coursework is a B and last years result for the first half (1 2 3) was 2 marks off an A.

Anyone know if he will he need a minimum of a D or E on this paper to end up scraping overall C?

Also, does anyone know a decent crammer site? Bitesize don't cover units 5 and 6. He's upstairs with the CGP OCR revision guide but I know he's left it too late. Just hoping maybe one fact might stick even if its the formula for something obscure.

He'll probably be ok - I know one shouldn't ,but I always revised at last minute .
And his previous results are good .
Honestly ,bet he'll be fine .
Have you printed off mark scheme ( answers ) and examiners report ?

belgo · 12/06/2010 17:46

Ilearnt the whole of the physics GCSE syllabus the night before the exam and got a B. And I'm crap at physics.

Getting him to write down whilst studying (rather then just reading), regular breaks for fresh air and food.

Yes its modular, he did the first 3 units last year. I have the mark schemes but not the examiners report. What is that?

What topics are on 4, 5, 6?

I could point you in the direction of some websites but am not familiar with that specification.

violetqueen · 12/06/2010 23:08

The examiners reports are their comments on the exams - what common mistakes students made etc.
They appear on the OCR website ,same page as the past papers ,scroll right down to bottom ,they call them "report on exam " I think .
Good luck - are you managing to keep calm with DC ?
If so ,when it's over and you can breathe ,let me know your secret .
I always "loose it " with mine ! I know I shouldn't ,it doesn't help ,but...

Learn how to use the periodic table you get in the exam. Learn the set equations (I remeber the stuff for production of sulfuric acid still!) and industrial processes if he has to. Learn how to draw and name the utensils for the experiments and you're half way there already.

Identify which questions carry big chucks of marks (industrial processes?) and learn complete answers for them.

I hate to say it but you can get a B regurgitating stuff learnt by heart and understanding nothing.

hettyhoover · 13/06/2010 13:49

Right, he needs to print off the specification which should be on the OCR website and go through it, so that he knows exactly what he needs to know. So he looks at 1 point on it, decides if he knows it totally/mostly/not at all, so he can narrow down what he actually still needs to revise using the CGP guide. Then, after going through the guide and making summary notes, he can do a practice exam style question (maybe from textbook/revision guide as it could take a while to find the specific topic in past paper).

Could try s-cool.co.uk for help with short notes, or docbrown.info is good with explanations if he's having trouble understanding something.

Thanks for all this, I have emailed his physics teacher who is going to see ds1 for an hour today and tomorrow for chemistry as well as wednesday and thursday before the physics exam on friday. He teaches the double science class so will have enough chemistry knowledge to help him cram. No good asking the chemistry teacher, ds1 can't stand her but the physics teacher is famous for being "cool"

not heard of docbrown but will look it up, have tried a few things from s-cool especially good for Geography I found, I'll get him to look at it tonight

violetqueen - keeping clam is not something I am good at. I have learned however that shouting or nagging is unproductive for all concerned sometimes though at times I get so frustrated I end up shouting. I have had a couple of migraines during it all and will be grateful once friday comes and he finishes the last one.
