Year 9 - GCSE in Statistics - Course Work HELP PLEASE!

Is anyone's DC doing this GCSE?

DS is doing it. He has course work to complete over the holidays and hand it in on first day back.

DS will not communicate to me what it is he is doing, I'm just trying to help him. I spoke to his form tutor last week who told me all the stats should be on a spreadsheet. Ds has hand written it and is arguing that his maths tutor has told him that this will be satisfactory. I have offered to type up the spreadsheet for him.

Can anyone share their experiences of this GCSE.

He won't even show me the questions, he said there aren't any and that they just know what to do. Grrr

HELP PLEASE!

We've just staggered through the project for statistics GCSE.
DS's teacher has been fantastic and given him structured advice on what needs doing with regards to explaining what graphs show, comparing data, creating scattergraphs, box and whisker diagrams and writing a conclusion that referred back to the original questions and used the data to justify it.
We used the CPG guide to Maths Statistics GCSE as well, because I didn't know half of the language.
We did have to type up everything that was possible to do so, DS handwrote his and it wasn't acceptable first time. It ended up being around 20 pages all together, including graphs and data sheets.
They've had a while to do it, and they handed the first part in before Feb half term so that they could have some guidance.
Perhaps your boy really does know what to do and doesn't need help.

Goblinchild thanks for your reply. He is good at maths so maybe its me that doesn't understand it. It's the presentation of the work that I'm getting in a flap about, and not having questions in front of me so that I don't even know if he's doing what he's supposed to be doing.

But, I am going to get that book you mentioned. Thanks again.

If he's good at maths and has had a good input from the teachers, you might just have to trust him and let him go ahead.
My DD's maths outstripped mine when she was 13, I remember the unsettled feeling I had of being left behind. It happens if you are lucky.

Monty100 · 02/04/2010 14:42

Bloss, there is, I'll do that too. Thanks.

Goblin, did you type it up in a table or a spreadsheet?

The data was in a range of tables, the graphs were hand-drawn and labelled in pencil and ink. There was a lot of written stuff that was typed up.

Just had a Google.
I put in AQA GCSE statistics project

and found this

AQA GCSE Mathematics Specification B Module 2: Statistics ...
It's a PDF so I don't know how to link it, but it seems to have some clear guidance as to what he should be looking for.
Does the school use moodle? DS's school put some guidance on that for the stats project too.

Hi again, been to Smiths and they didn't have the book. Grr. I'll go to another tomorrow which is bigger. While he was out he found this convo on my laptop lol. He seems to be a bit more forthcoming now and he's working. At least he understands why I'm going on at him. lol Thanks again. App they don't use moodle. He seems confident that he knows what he's doing at least. I phoned his friend's mum and the friend is doing the lower one so didn't get anywhere there either. Still, onwards and upwards eh! I'll google as you suggest. Thanks.

I have taught this so but not for a few years so here goes

  1. It can be handwritten or typed, makes no difference. Typed can be more easily changed if necessary but takes longer.
  2. He should have a mass of data in a spreadsheet 20 x 100. If his data isn't in a spreadsheet how is he organising it? The spreadsheet then allows easy sorting and calculations to be done.
  3. Diagrams and graphs are best done by hand on graph or squared paper.
  4. What is the project - there a few classics and if it is one of those I can give you more detailed advice. 5)There are no questions as such, he is right.
  5. He may not have to complete the whole thing for after Easter- is this the final deadline or just a deadline for the first stage - more likely. 7)Some fantastic resources including pupil checklists here

DD is doing this next year in yr9, just read one of the coursework documents [gulp] Thanks for the link it's now been bookmarked.

Monty100 · 03/04/2010 20:21

MN - Wow thanks for that! He has masses of sheets of paper, all handwritten, fairly neatly I guess, but I am insisting he types it up. He hasn't even done any graphs or charts yet!

You've reassured me that I'm not wrong on some levels. lol

This really helps! Thanks again.
