Hi

Quick question on behalf of a friend....her Daughter was sent out of class for talking and whilst she was outside, the teacher went through her bag. Is this allowed ?

Is she sure?

coldtits · 27/03/2010 15:58

yes

janeite · 27/03/2010 16:00

Yes a teacher can search a bag - but I would never do it in those circumstances and would be surprised if any teacher was daft enough to do that.

loumum3 · 27/03/2010 16:03

My son was in the class and saw what happened. The teacher searched the bag, found her mobile phone and gave her a detention. I think he was having a bad day

It all sounds very odd. Was the phone ringing?

OldLadyKnowsNothing · 27/03/2010 16:04

Was the mobile switched on? Had it rung while the girl was out?

loumum3 · 27/03/2010 16:05

No, phone was turned off.

i have no idea why a teacher would go looking for a turned off phone. there is more to this story of course.

TheFallenMadonna · 27/03/2010 16:08

Well, at my school a phone is confiscated if we have sight of it. Or sound So a phone switched off and in a bag is not a problem. A phone out, or ringing in a bag - that I would confiscate. They would get it back at the end of the day the first time, and after that a parent would need to come in and collect it.

Are they banned outright at your DS's school?

loumum3 · 27/03/2010 16:10

Yes they are banned but none of the kids take any notice !

So the teacher suspected there was a phone and looked and found it?

Like I said, it seems odd. She was sent out for talking? There has to be more to this...

MaisietheMorningsideCat · 27/03/2010 16:13

Obviously the rule is not enforced enough then. If the kids don't take any notice, why don't the parents?

As Foxy says - there is more to this story.

foxytocin · 27/03/2010 16:22

Does anyone know of a school which bans mobile phones on site outright? I have only heard of having them switched off from walking inside the school gates till leaving. If a student needs to contact parents during the school day, he or she has to use a school land line.

Switched on mobiles are confiscated.

loumum3 · 27/03/2010 16:23

It does seem odd doesn't it ? She was sent out for talking and he checked her bag and found the phone - weird. I will tell my friend that he is allowed to search bags, her daughter is embarrassed as she had tampax in her bag - who would want to be 14 again ?!

TheFallenMadonna · 27/03/2010 16:24

There's more to it. Either your DS doesn;t know, or he isn't telling, but there is.

loumum3 · 27/03/2010 16:24

Our school has phones banned outright.

OP posts:
loumum3 · 27/03/2010 16:26

Nope honestly, that's how they tell it...she is a chatterbox, the teacher had enough of her quite rightly and sent her out but the phone bit is weird.

OP posts:
foxytocin · 27/03/2010 16:27

how does the school reconcile that policy with the safety issues which parents certainly have raised that if they are traveling to and from school possibly alone, they'd rather their child had a phone on their person as a safety net?

loumum3 · 27/03/2010 16:29

Not sure, but it is a ban that is enforced very strictly by some teachers whilst others tell them to get their phones out and listen to music whilst they do revision !

OP posts:
foxytocin · 27/03/2010 16:33

sounds like she was using the phone surreptitiously and put it away when challenged. i can't think anyone in his or her right mind would go looking for a phone when they had no reason to think that one wasn't there.

missmama · 27/03/2010 16:34

At DS's school phones are banned outright.
They hand them over to the form teacher at registration who then locks them in a cupboard for the day and collect them at the end of the day.

loumum3 · 27/03/2010 16:36

My dc says her bag was on the floor under the desk, she wasn't using it and it wasn't on - it was inside a zipped bit of the bag. It is certainly a strange situation but I will tell my friend that teachers can search bags and let her deal with it !

OP posts:
foxytocin · 27/03/2010 16:38

bloomin heck there is no way I would want to be taking 30 mobiles off kids in the morning and returning them at 3.15.

violetqueen · 27/03/2010 18:18

My DC's school's policy is for them all to hand their phones it at reception in the morning and collect after school .
lol as they say ,can't imagine that this happens ,but that's the stated policy .

Goblinchild · 27/03/2010 18:47

My son's bag has been searched by teachers a number of times, thanks to all the annoying brats who like to see if they can push him into meltdown.
They lie to the teacher...X has got a knife, matches, dangerous chemicals, my mobile, a porno mag in his bag, I SAW it, honest guv.
So, apologetically, the teacher has to get the bag searched for dangerous materials.
And finds nothing.
He used to get very defensive and walk out afterwards, Now he leans against the wall and glares at the accusers. He's calm about it now, he knows the teachers believe him.

My bet was that she was using it and got caught out. Teen boys are usually less observant than a teacher so your DS might not have spotted her. Or she's done it in other classes and the message was passed on, so he thought she was messing around with it.
