School Admissions - What constitutes a special medical reason??

DS has a host of medical issues which I feel justify a place in our local school. It is a very popular school though and part of me worries that if I identify his medical issues they might find a reason not to admit him. I am thinking about this as several friends have been very very disappointed this year.

Whilst there is nothing to loose by putting the reasons for your preferences on the application form, the reality is that the school you are allocated is based on the admission criteria. There is no way in my opinion that your son's medical condition could be utilised to gain a place at a specified school under the admission criteria.
However if the worst situation came about and you were allocated the boys school then you can appeal for the two mixed schools, based on PRH's suggestion when an admission panel will potentially be far more understanding of the issues, than the LA's blanket approach to admission criteria.

Medical issues would be something like needing a school that was all on one floor, and a school with a lift, because he couldn't easily negotiate stairs.

Or a school with specific support for disabled students.

It depends on the availability of local schools and your son's conditions.
