I know I know. I am terribly nosey. I can't help myself.

(Their parents went through a few previous papers with them to prepare them though - or something like that)

Strix · 04/03/2010 18:06

OMG... where have you been?

Hallo

DD1 did not get in although she has been tutored for a year. Not a waste of time though as she enjoyed it, but her heart was not set on going to Tiffin's. She is now going to LEH - the school she wanted to go to.

statistically it is easier to get into LEH.
they have 3 applicants for each place while Tiffin have about 12 for each place.

Mad isn't it?

Strix · 05/03/2010 12:06

Do you mind if I ask if she has qualified for any kind of scholarship or if you are now faced with full fees.

LEH is lovely. If money was no object I would be very happy to send DD there.

And, despite it being harder to get into Tiffin Girls than LEH, LEH 'does better' by the girls in terms of A-level results etc - presumably because of class sizes and whatever other benefits you pay for.

2009 results:
LEH A grades: 82%, B grades: 13%
Tiffin A grades: 64%, B grades: 20%

The same is true of Tiffin Boys versus less selective boys' independents.

Though even if you could afford it, you might not think the difference worth £13,000 a year and rising.

Strix · 05/03/2010 12:30

I suspect Tiffin get a lot of applicants who don't bother applying to LEH because parents know it is out of price range so don't bother applying for something they aren't going to take up. Whereas with Tiffin you might think oh well, let's go for it, nothing to lose.

Interesting to know A level results.

I met someone a few months ago whose daughter went to LEH prep and is now at Tiffin.

I wonder how many girls apply to both and only get into one... and which one that tends to be.

No bursary or scholorship so its going to be tough. DD2 has a non means tested bursary from Reception to Year 2 so she will be ok for the next 2 years, but DS3 starts at her school in September although he will only be 2 and a half so will be in the nursary section and I can pay by CCV's. Its going to be a difficult few years, even though I love LEH and the facilities it has.

Ouch. My sympathies.

The girl I know who has got into Tiffin also got offered a scholarship to LEH and St Paul's Girls.

That's interesting to see the results comparison.

CountessDracula · 06/03/2010 16:12

who are you strix?
I have been in REAL LIFE
and here too just not a lot

drosophila · 06/03/2010 18:11

What type of test is it for Tiffin. Is it verbal/non verbal.

claig · 06/03/2010 20:05

yes the Tiffin tests are VR and NVR (verbal reasoning and non-verbal reasoning)

Hello - this is my first post here. I'm looking for some advice...

My daughter is currently third on the waiting list for Tiffin Girls, and I'm biting my nails!

Does anyone know how fast the waiting list usually moves? Or how the whole waiting list process works? And does anyone know anyone (preferably three people!) who have been offered a place at Tiffins, but are planning on turning it down?

Any advice would be welcome to ease my poor nerves!

Strix · 07/03/2010 20:48

Gosh, this must be very nere racking for you. Good luck! Sorry, no knowledge of how fast the waiting list might move.

Sal107 - You could also drop into the elevenplusexams website, which will have a thread on the waiting list in the Surrey/Sutton section.

Iirc the waiting list moves quickly, then slows to a crawl over the summer. I suspect no. 3 on the waiting list is fine.

cyb · 08/03/2010 07:34

if you are in 3rd place you will be fine

cyb · 08/03/2010 07:35

I know it depends each year but my dd was 12th and got in

Strix · 08/03/2010 09:03

castles intheair, do you mind if I ask what sort of LEH StPG scholarships? And what she did to qualify for them? How much of the tuition do they cover?

Sorry for nosiness. Hope you don't mind me asking.

Sal107 · 08/03/2010 09:50

Thanks animula and cyb-

My daughter and husband are both convinced she'll get in, but I don't want to count my chickens! And it seems a weird year. The cut off mark was so much higher and there were so many more children entered, I can't help worrying that fewer people will opt for another school. The effect of the credit crunch, I suppose.

I'll just have to try and be patient!
