Any views on Coombe Girls School, Kingston

Will be applying for secondary schools for DD next autumn, just starting to consider options.

Neighbours DDs go to Coombe Girls in Kingston upon Thames, seems a really good school, anyone got any experience of this school? What is the catchment area?

Thanks

School is excellent. It is streamed, and has an amazing head. If there is an issue- the school willtry and sort it (ime).
Where do you live?

YorkshireRose · 08/11/2009 23:03

Thanks for the reply deaddei. Been away this weekend so not had opportunity to reply before.

We live just off Kingston Hill - nearly opposite the junction with Warren Road.

Well you shouldn't have a problem with being in the catchment then. Are you a royal blue sweatshirt school???

YorkshireRose · 10/11/2009 10:20

No, sadly the catchment area for the blue sweatshirts is so tight that we missed out when DD was applying. Neighbours' DDs only got in at the last minute from the waiting list. Would have loved DD to go there, great school. She is at private prep at the moment but money is tight.

Hopefully will have more luck with secondary entry as catchment area for Coombe Girls will be wider - I hope!

hi my ds has a place at coobe boys and so far it is brilliant they bend over backwards to help,i am in merton so not even my borough.i am getting help with my ds anxiety on a one to one basis any other borough i would have a fight on my hands also they have the same headmistress good luck

Wheelybug · 12/11/2009 18:27

I live exceedingly close to Coombe Girls and although my girls are far too young to go yet, the impression I have of Coombe Girls girls is that they all seem v. polite and nice ! They walk passed my house in droves everyday.

I have a friend who teaches driving in the area and she says all the people she has taught from there have been lovely girls.

(I know you're probably looking for academic advise but think this is also important !)

deaddei · 12/11/2009 18:31

Wheelybug- you must be near me in NM. (WAVES HELLO)
People are always commenting how happy my dd is on the way to school! maybe she passes your house!
Bigdonna- my ds will probably go there next year- and I will be very proud. Mrs C is marvellous. Is he in yr 7?

Wheelybug · 12/11/2009 18:32

Hello Deaddei - yes v. possibly !! Are you in the Groves if that's not too much info?

Wheelybug · 12/11/2009 18:34

Good news the boys school is looking up ! I only have girls but friends with boys (our children are in reception so a loooong way to go) worry about secondary school although I have heard it is getting much much better since the 'new' head.

deaddei · 12/11/2009 18:47

Just outside the Groves near the cricket ground.
The last 3 years intake of boys has been from "regular" families, who want their boys to do well- support with homework etc. I know a lot of mums who are so happy even though they were a bit apprehensive- eg those who didn't get into Tiffin/Sutton. I would rather ds went to Coombe rather than T/S. But I know parents who would report me to SS for that thought (which is wh yI do not go near the school gate!)

Wheelybug · 12/11/2009 19:28

Ah yes - my dd used to go to nursery on the corner ! We're not a million miles away - I think, in estate agent speak 'edge of Groves' but the other side to you.

That's what I'd heard about Coombe Boys from Dd1's headmistress actually who is a champion of CB I think.

deaddei · 12/11/2009 19:45

Is that the school with navy sweatchirts, not a million miles from the nursery?
My dcs went there,lovely school.

Wheelybug · 12/11/2009 19:53

Yes deddei ! Am glad you said that - we could have just scraped into the royal blue sweatshirt school but had a much better feeling about the navy blue sweatshirt place and often when I read about the royal blue one on MN (and when it comes up in 'best schools in the world' or whatever) I begin to doubt our decision. but so far, I feel we're in the right place. DD1 v. happy which is the main thing !

YorkshireRose · 13/11/2009 12:20

Wheely - I feel the same as you about Tiffin (but Girls in my case as have DD). Seems to be a pressurised exam factory, makes me feel very uneasy about DD going there though she is very bright and would have a good chance of getting a place.

Coombe Girls seems to have got the balance right from all I have heard.

deaddei · 18/11/2009 22:37

How funny that we may all have seen each other in Puccinos! (or Glass House)

isittooearlyforgin · 18/11/2009 22:52

I went to Coombe Girls 20 years ago - realise this isn't particulary helpful but enjoyed it!
