League tables confusion + any opinions on Compton School N12?

Hi - this is another post about how to select a secondary school really.I do not have a head for figures/tables (too much like maths..shudder) and am confused by the results the school gives, the BBC league tables give, the Times give as they are all slightly different. Where is best, most up to date, place to compare gcse results? For example I visited Compton in Finchley north London. I'm pretty sure the head said they had 80% gcse A-C passes but in Beeb league tables it said 55%?!Anyone know of Compton. I wasn't even seriously considering it but I visited and liked it....

The Beeb figure will be pupils who pass 5 gcse A-C passes including maths and english.

The head was probably referring to 5 A-C passes not necessarily having a pass in maths or english.

I have heard of the Compton School. The Head is supposed to be very good. If you live in the area why don't you go to The Wren Acadamy and see what it is like. Their open evening is tomorrow night starting 5.30. I will be visiting to have a look for my ds, i'm quite interested, have heard very good things about this school.

yes I'm going to wren tomorrow night too. I know of a parent renting nearby to get dc in. The only thing that puts me off is the Christian leaning (we're atheists).

sorry made a mistake the open evening is on wed night 7th oct. Re Christian learning, whichever school you go to there will be religous education.

boyngirl · 05/10/2009 17:17

Yes obviously there would be religious education at all schools but Wren is sponsored by C of E and website says:
'The daily life of the Academy presents opportunities for students to learn about Christian beliefs and engage in acts of worship, under the guidance of senior staff. From 2009, there will be a chapel for prayer, services and quiet reflection. We have a close relationship with local clergy. All students, be they Christian, of other faiths or none, will be expected to attend events which celebrate our Christian ethos.'

Thanks re open evening date, yes I did know it was Wed night, was just getting confused as to what day it is today!

what did you think of the open evening at Wren.

Eurot · 12/10/2009 11:59

I posted over on another thread about this, but just to say: don't be put off Wren by the God stuff. My niece goes there, nad we're proud atheists but it really isn't a problem. School chaplain Rev Kirby is a great bloke, even if he does do God...;-)

And the school is just bursting with energy and enthusiasm.

Hello there, can anyone tell me what the catchment area for Wren Academy is. Many thanks

sue41 · 31/08/2010 16:16

Catchment area for Wren 2010 was 0.659 miles.

Eurot · 31/08/2010 21:58

Hey Sue, isn't your dc starting at Wren this week? Hope all goes fab. We're up to year 9 this year, can hardly believe it. It's such a fantastic school and we are all so fortunate to be a part of it.

sue41 · 03/09/2010 00:01

Hi Eurot

Yes she started today!! As a lovely day I think she found the full uniform a bit hot, but came out hot and happy!!
Very impressed with the student diary, so much information!

Can't believe up to year 9 already, I remember the seeing about the school early on and thinking how great it would be for one of mine to go ... and ....I'm a very lucky person and I hope my dc will appreciate how lucky she is too!

Hope you have a good term, and good luck in choosing options this year.

Sue

Compton is a good school. Has come on leaps and bounds in recent years, very well thought of within the borough/LEA, and has strong links with the excellent sixth form college down the road, Woodhouse (Very small catchment area, though).

I'd be very surprised if their pass rate A-Cs is 55%. I am pretty sure it is up in the 70s or 80s.
