Call all Yr11 teachers! Need help for anxious admin-phobic DH

Dh is in his first few weeks teaching Yr11s in a specical school. So far so OK. But he is getting concerned about the paperwork he is supposed to be doing. School is very supportive in theory but when he tries to get someone to sit down and explain in words of one-syllable exactly what records he needs to be keeping for his pupils he never actually gets anywhere. He gets promised of help but everyone is so busy.

So is there a check list of forms/records that he should be completing on a daily/weekly basis. So far he's only actually taught 3 days so it's not as if there's a long backlog but he needs to get this sorted before it becomes a big problem.

Also is it a good idea for a male teacher to be giving sex/relationship lessons to a mixed-sex class including one girls who is in foster care due to having suffered sexual abuse at home? He thinks not. School haven't confirmed he is actually expected to do this but it's been mentioned. Would he be within his rights to refuse, or raise his concerns?

What subject does he teach?

And what kind of special school- EBD? MLD?

Also, how many students per class?

I have some pro formas that may be appropriate....

Oh tethersend you are a star!

EBD. There are 13 in his class. I think he's doing English but am not sure . He qualified with geography but that was a long time ago.

Great, if there are 13 students in each class, you should be able to keep a record of targets and progress for each lesson- I have a proforma that will help- although will not be able to send it until next week, as I am not back into school until then, sorry.

Is he a head of department?

Sorry to ask so many questions, just want to send you the right stuff...

No he isn't a head of dept This is his first class for 14yrs - qualified in 96, taught for a few terms, left teaching and did other things for a while, got a post as an LSA last year and was encouraged to apply for a full teaching post by the school. So it's a bit nerve-wracking atm.

Great- not being a HoD is good news, as it means somebody else is - what I mean by that is that it is the responsibility of the HoD to provide templates on which to plan and mark work, so if OFSTED arrive, they will want to see the schemes of work he is working to. The HoD should already have these in place. They should, in year 11, be directly related to the assessment criteria of the exam board they are using.

In theory, you should produce a lesson plan for each lesson, but in practice I find this unworkable, so I write detailed schemes of work which cover half a term.

As it is EBD, keeping a record of each student's behaviour each lesson is a good idea; the school would be wise to have a system of recording this, but they may not. I will definitely forward the proformas next week (do you have an email address?)

I am not an English teacher (am head of art), but do teach in a secondary EBD school.

Good luck to him- for what it's worth, developing a relationship with the kids takes precedence over paperwork in EBD in my experience!

Oh, and the sex ed should really be handled carefully, he is right to raise concerns- I think the fact that he has these concerns is testament to his professionalism, and he should voice them to his line manager.

tethers you are a total star! He has no problem with developing relationships with the pupils. That has never been an issue. But they are expecting Ofsted soonish.

The girls SW should advise on whether it is appropriate. Speak to them or the designated teacher who should have that info. I used to work in a SN school and we had a very similar case and she was having specialist help in that area.

Mixed classes isn't neccessarily an issue as it is a SN school I assume he has TA support and that would enable them to split off into smaller groups for the more sensitive issues. IME there are very few girls in a SN school and when we were in a similar situation the 'girls ' group was only 2 students who went off with a female TA.

NoahDear- you are right not to, it is not your responsibility unless it has been specifically written into your job description (with pay to reflect it )

DH is being assessed on Wednesday by the head. And then Ofsted are coming in on Thursday and Friday. He seems remarkably calm......

I think he's getting nervous now. He's teaching 'humantiesn' tomorrow and is making huge cardboard figures of Stuart people. Was stomping and swearing cos he couldn't find the scissors.

Just rang him. It went 'OK' apparently. Not as well as he hoped but OK. Probably won't get feedback today as they are getting ready for the Gestapo Ofsted inspectors tomorrow and Thursday.

Indeed

Both the head and the Ofsted inspector were impressed that he could tell them where things hasn't gone 100% as he wanted.
