Does anyone else think they should have homework clubs after school?

Cos I am going nuts doing this 5 days in

She has had homework every day. Small tasks but they're trying to get them used to it. She is very resistant and it's doing nothing for our relationship.

DH was supposed to be doing this part of life (teacher) but he gets home too late to do it.

I am just getting more and more irritated.

I WANNA HOMEWORK CLUB!!!!!!!!!!

IME quite a lot of 'challenging' (for want of a better word) schools have one.

And private schools.

Go figure.

Homework club and after school club and after school activities are some of the reasons people send the DCs to fee paying schools.

All state schools should have them as well as holiday clubs.

Yes when I worked in a challenging school we had one for each year group, as head of year I ran mine. Lots of our students could not for various reasons do homework at home so they did it with me. I would provide snacks and a welcoming friendly environment. It gave me an opportunity to get to know the pupils in my year group. I used to have parents and grandparents come in as well which was fantastic. At one point I had younger siblings from the catchment schools coming in so they could use our facilities.

I know teach in a very different school and homework support is much more ad hoc. My pupils all know, especially my tutor group that they are welcome to sit in my room and do their homework if they need to.

The only thing that does concern me is that is the point of a homework is to check understanding they must not become reliant on teachers or peers to help as that would then defeat the point. Although realistically parents and siblings help at home so perhaps it is better that teachers give the help knowing where to stop.

No, I don't, in answer to OP, if children still in primary. Have no thoughts as yet on older kids, although I would probably think it is wrong, tbh...I just think this world is cerraazzzeeee....

The kids in my homework club did their own homework riven (year 7) I was just providing somewhere warm and calm to do it. If I ever had to help a child I would contact the teacher who set it or put a note on the homework.

My school has one (deprived area) but tbh I think that getting children to do their H/W is the parent's job. I work with them all day at school, I set their H/W and I mark it - but it is exactly that - HOMEwork.

However, many of the children at my school don't have parents with that sort of ethic, so it's good that they get the opportunities to get support at school.

I think they're a great idea. My ds's school has one but I haven't convinced him to go yet! It's much better (IMO) for children to do their work straight after school when it is fresh in their minds in a quiet environment and alongside their peers. My house isn't that noisy but there is some noise and the obvious distractions.

dd couldn't join anyway, because she has to use disabled transport

but she's better off doing her homework here anyway, because we've got more books

Isn't a club when they do work at school supervised by a teacher actually just a longer school day?

cory · 19/10/2009 07:51

yes, I think I agree with you, seeker

in this case, I am not all that annoyed with the transport side of thing, because I think dd is better off having more control of how she structures her homework anyway

and for ds, I think it's much better for him to be able to have a play outside and then do his homework after dark: if he stayed for homework club, he wouldn't be able to do much playing outside in winter

I think kids need fresh air more than they need homework!

seeker · 19/10/2009 09:56

Also, if they do their homework at a
school , how would you keep an eye on how they were getting on a d what they are doing? That's still important even in secondary school.
