Hi all,

Can anyone recommend a good tutor in the Chelmsford (Essex) area for a primary (yr 4) child. Need some math confidence building - mental maths just ain't happening at the mo and its getting to that time when they start having mental math tests in class ..poor bairns.... Cheers all,

I'm not in your area, and can't recommend tutors, but have you considered asking your DC's teacher? We did this, and it worked well because the teacher knew where DD's strengths were, and where she needed help. We paid her of course, and she came to our house.

Try a local Kip Mcgrath centre. My DD goes to the one in Billericay and I know friends who who rate the centre in Chelmsford very highly. Look
here

They do an initial free assessment then set up a program for the child to follow at the centre and then there's usually a little bit of homework. You get feed back after every session.

It's very engaging using a combination of computer and short activities. I know loads of people who have used a these centres and all of them are very happy with their child's progress. More importantly children seem to really enjoy it.

Hi Smartiejake,

Ahhh, that was top of my list actually, so good to have the personal endorsement. I will call them tomorrow and get an assess scheduled. Cheers for that,

But have you talked to the teacher first?

UKtutors.co.uk - we found a wonderful lady - all the tutors have a profile so you can get a good ''feel' before you contact them and make a choice that matches your needs.

Re asking own teacher - donnt want to totally dismiss this, but we just felt if ds2 wasn?t ??getting?? it with class tutor in school (who is wonderful but has a very girly style?) - then perhaps a totally different style was needed - sometimes it is just a different was of saying something that makes children get it - more of the same is not always a good thing J

hippyhil · 10/06/2009 14:31

Thanks for this folks - am looking into both at the mo.
I agree that a different style/context can sometimes do the trick. DD really enjoys her school and her teacher as it is and i wouldn't want that dynamic altered.
Cheers all

We can recommend Kip McGrath too - ours is brilliant but they are franchises I believe so try and get local recommendations, although I think it probably boils down to whether your child gets on with tutor.

Sorry, I meant - have you asked the teacher whether you dd is "behind" or needs extra help? Often there are things that can be done in school to help children who 'aren't getting" something. It may be that she's doing better in school than you think - or that the teacher has just messed that there are gaps (this happens even with the best teachers sometimes)

So why are looking for tutor? Not ment to be confuntational but think you need to be clear about what you are looking for in a tutor and why

can anyone reccommend a primary school tutor for my daughter who is 6. we live in the Shaftesbury area of Dorset

You could try tutoring your child yourself. Here's my DIY Kumon approach
There's also an interview with a tutor which should give you pointers on how to use your tutor if you decide to use one.
