I got a call to collect her on Friday and she has got worse over the weekend. She has a cold, sore throat etc with a temperature. She wasn't too bad yesterday and managed to do some revision for the exams she should have tomorrow but today she has slept most of the day and there is no way she will be well enough to go tomorrow. My question is what do secondary schools do in cases like this? Will they pull her out of lessons to do the exams she misses?

I should imagine they'll estimate what she would get based on her performace this past year. I wouldnt worry.

Agree. I wouldn't worry too much about it. If it's a core subject, she may be asked to do it when she's well enough.

From memory DD missed one of her Yr7 progress tests. (because thats what they are, not exams.) I just remember, at the parent consultation evening, her mark for that subject was calculated on what she'd done during the year.

Not a major issue, I don't believe.

Thanks hercules1. I didn't occur to me that she might just not do them!! It's such a shame as I've been so proud of how well she has organised her revision. I have told her not to worry as I am sure she will not be the only one not there - it seems to be doing the rounds!

Thanks herbietea and MaureenMLove. I did think I would rather she didn't do them than try to do them when she wasn't at her best. I'm glad it is only Y7 exams and not GCSEs or A'Levels! We have all that to come

Don't worry about it. I am stressing tonight as dd is unwell and has maths gcse tomorrow.

webwiz · 17/05/2009 21:48

Oh dear PimmPom I hope she feels better. My DD is taking her Maths GSCE tomorrow as well. A couple of weeks ago she took her German oral completely dosed up with cold and flu remedies and then when straight to bed afterwards. Its horrible but they just have to take the exam no matter how bad they feel.

MrsBartlet · 17/05/2009 22:13

You're right - in the general scheme of things it really doesn't matter. What do you do if they are not feeling well when they have a GCSE? Hope your dd feels better for tomorrow Pimmpom.

Well, I'm waiting till 12.00 to dose her up for 1.00pm exam. She has cold/flu type virus and has no energy at all! Such a shame when this happens . Hope she feels better for English Lit tomorrow.

Good luck to everyone else.

My DS missed his Yr 7 exam for maths last year as he was ill (fainted just before school and was sick!!). He just took it again at a later date on his own in the library. I wouldn't worry at all, in the great scheme of things it won't matter!

margotfonteyn · 18/05/2009 12:35

BTW if they are ill when they do GCSEs, I think you need a Drs letter. But they still have contingency plans in schools for this sort of thing with public examinations.

MrsBartlet · 18/05/2009 13:21

That's good to know margot. I don't remember worrying about things like this when I was doing exams!

I;m too ill to go infor my exam .... but I;m only the teacher....

Hope your kiddi is feeling better!

MrsBartlet · 20/05/2009 07:53

Thanks mumblecrumble. Hope you are feeling better today. She is getting better slowly but she is still going to be off today. I was hoping yesterday she could maybe do a bit of revision and start to get back to normal but she slept for half the morning and spent the rest of the day coughing! School have told us that she can do the exams at home with us invigilating It is either that or she has to do them in each of her subject lessons but I think she will then get behind. I guess that is what we will be doing over half-term! Hopefully she is going back tomorrow but the friend she caught it from has been off for 7 days with it now. I have already changed my work days around and dh is working at home today (as he has to go to the doctors - healthy house, eh?) but we both need to go to work tomorrow. It is so difficult juggling work when they are ill and I only work 9 hours a week at the moment!!

Oh thats a good idea, you doing them at home with you..... cos of course there'd be no cheating!!!

Sorry jugglin is so hard. We've been lucky with dhs shift pattern has been favourable to me being ill this week.

I'm at the not well enough to do fun stuff but well enough to be boed. However I;m very lucky: DD has just slept for 3 hours and I'e let her and slept myself.

Good luck to your daughter!!! [and you!]

MrsBartlet · 21/05/2009 19:04

Thanks - I think we might need it! DD has brought home her two maths papers and a physics paper today. I expected them to come in a sealed envelope but they have been given to her as they come. Being a niaive Y7 she didn't even use the opportunity to take a peak at them before handing them over to me! I have had a quick look at them and they look really difficult to me - I had to put them away as it was making me a panic looking at them! Got to go and help her revise for her French oral now - that is much more up my street than maths and physics!
