Where can I find info on the content of the syllabus? DS class have been studying Black history amongst other things. And today in his revision he has written 83% of all technology and invention was by black people. Now I am not disputing this but when I suggested he reference this source, he kicked off in the way teenagers are wont to do when challenged. What I'd like to do is try and find something, anything that could go partway to substantiating this claim.

Any ideas??

What a bizarrely precise percentage for something so broad.

National curriculum at Ks3&4

Black history is there to be covered but doesn't have exact areas to be covered - or any that would account for your ds's statement. You might be better off googling it?

itchyandscratchy · 10/05/2009 15:34

this site seems to despute a lot of claims - but you'd have to know what the motivation behind the site itself might be...? Seems a bit dismissive - but I don't know enough about history anyway

itchyandscratchy I found that site and it told me nothing. DS still huffing and not talking to me. That normally indicates he knows he is wrong, however this time he has challenged me to email the history teacher which I have done, as he knew I would so we shll wait and see.

I did have a good google but couldnt find nything to support the statement. Quite disapointed, cant remember the last time I couldnt find the answer to what I wanted on the internet.

truggling to believe that TBH.i can't think of a single black inventor ?

If your ds sat down and thought about it he would realise that it is a complete impossibility to come up with a percentage of all technology or invention. Do we know the colour of the person who invented the wheel? Or who first found out that sticking a piece of meat in the fire would make it taste better and keep longer? No, we don't.

How do you even decide which inventions to count or what counts as a separate invention? The wheel? The carriage? The chariot? One invention or three?

These things are quite simply not quantifiable.

If he is talking about major technological inventions of the Renaissance/Victorian era, then the percentage is almost certainly too high. and in any case, not quantifiable
