  1. How old is your dc? 12

  2. Do you monitor the time your dc spends on 'screens'? yes

  3. Do you have formal limits per day or per week? not really Would monitor it over a week probably and then comment if I thought dc was on it excessively.

  4. Do you bend/flex those limits or are they absolute? very flexible

robinpud · 23/03/2009 17:54
  1. How old is your dc? 12
  2. Do you monitor the time your dc spends on 'screens'? Yes, informally
  3. Do you have formal limits per day or per week? Child is very sensible so it is discretionary. Homework often seems to involve a screen, thanks to the school using a portal. Tv watching quite minor.
  4. Do you bend/flex those limits or are they absolute? Entirely flexible as child is so sensible but with younger dc it will need to be absolute.

If you answered "yes" to 3, what are the limits you set:
5a) Computer per school day- about an hour max
5b) Computer per weekend/holiday day about an hour max
5c) TV per school day- around an hour
5d) TV per holiday day- variable , less in summer.5e) Other (please specify) per school day DS- has gone out of vogue atm but phone is very popular.
5f) Other per holiday day

Thank you for your time.

robinpud · 23/03/2009 17:55

Perhaps to put that in perspective, dc does at least an hour of sport a day either at school or after and at weekends.. so no problem with exercise/ screen balance

Slambang · 23/03/2009 18:04

Pleae fill in my quick survey:

  1. How old is your dc? 12
  2. Do you monitor the time your dc spends on 'screens'? yes
  3. Do you have formal limits per day or per week? yes

5b) Computer per weekend/holiday day
5c) TV per school day
5d) TV per holiday day
5e) Other (please specify) per school day
5f) Other per holiday day

answers to all 5a-f is max of 2 hours 'technology' per day including PC use, all electronic games etc but TV is generally allowed on top.

Having said that, ds tends not to use xbox etc on school days otherwise I would need to reduce the week day ration!

seeker · 23/03/2009 18:17

yes-ish
yes

I bundle all screen time together and include time spent on phone texting. Lots on Sunday and on some days in the holidays - an hour at most on school days. We always have a bit of a family TV orgy on Saturday nights, so Saturdays don't count!

MaureenMLove · 23/03/2009 18:35
  1. How old is your dc? 13
  2. Do you monitor the time your dc spends on 'screens'? yes, on week days
  3. Do you have formal limits per day or per week? yes, pc switches off automatically, same time every day.
  4. Do you bend/flex those limits or are they absolute? Bend slightly on special occassions.

If you answered "yes" to 3, what are the limits you set: Switches off at 7pm, but she doesn't get it until chores/homework are done.
5a) Computer per school day - 2 hours max
5b) Computer per weekend/holiday day - anytime
5c) TV per school day - when jobs are done.
5d) TV per holiday day - when jobs are done.
5e) Other (please specify) per school day - ditto
5f) Other per holiday day - ditto

roisin · 23/03/2009 20:11

Thanks for this: very interesting.
After being more flexible with ds1 for a while, we've decided to be stricter again. We've suggested max of 1 hr on computer per school day and 2 hrs per weekend day, which he thinks is wildly unfair.

I know most of his friends have PCs & TVs in the bedrooms and unlimited access. But I just wanted to sound out the opinions of people who do think it's something that should be regulated/limited.

Thanks.

DDS aged nearly 11 and nearly 13
don't limit time. just watch from a distance. they tend to go through phases of wanting to use computer/DS and will need to be told that time is up after an hour orso but normally they just have a half hour here and there.
is that shockingly lax?

controlfreakythecontrolfreak · 23/03/2009 20:35

hell will freeze over before my dcs have either a computer or tv in their bedroom.....

troutpout · 23/03/2009 20:47
  1. How old is your dc? 11
  2. Do you monitor the time your dc spends on 'screens'? yes
  3. Do you have formal limits per day or per week? formal(ish)...per day usually an hour on computer on a weekday..2 hours weekend. ds doesn't really regularly watch tv ..(apart from harry hill at the weekend). I would let him watch an hour or so of tv...or a couple of short programs if he wanted too. He doesn't really watch films. But i'd let him watch one if he wanted.
  4. Do you bend/flex those limits or are they absolute? A bit bendy

  1. How old is your dc? just turned 12
  2. Do you monitor the time your dc spends on 'screens'? yes
  3. Do you have formal limits per day or per week? informal - no more than an hour a day as long as homework is done first
  4. Do you bend/flex those limits or are they absolute? there's a little leeway but not too much - ds is pretty good at policing himself unless he's just got a new game!

If you answered "yes" to 3, what are the limits you set:
5a) Computer per school day 1 hour screen time in total so it's up to him whether it's tv/computer/xbox
5b) Computer per weekend/holiday day - limits are less stringent but I wouldn't want him spending any more than 2 hours a day on screen time in total - but it also depends on what else he's doing/what the weather's like/if we all fancy watching a film etc
5c) TV per school day see above
5d) TV per holiday day
5e) Other (please specify) per school day
5f) Other per holiday day

mimsum · 24/03/2009 09:45

just to add he doesn't have pc/laptop/tv in his room - and never will

and he's a swimmer so trains most days (pool/land training) for at least 2 hours so I'm not worried about screen/exercise balance

5b) Friday night, Saturday (after music & sport), & Sunday if they're good.

5c)Schoolday TV, 2 hour max but often none. Will record things they really want for Friday & Saturday nights.

5d)Hols TV, No limit really but often they are out playing sport. Might spend whole day watching a test match!

5e) XBox 360 etc, only weekends. Same as computer. No limit on hand held PSP in car.

5f)Xbox etc., no limit in hols on wet/cold days often have mates round. Other days boot them out of house.

Same as mimsum we don't have any screens in bedrooms. Also XBox and computer shared between 12 & 13 year olds and their older brother. If they start to argue about sharing nobody gets ago. So they have to compromise (sp?).
