oxbridge and module resits - Do they know?

NotAnOtter · 12/03/2009 20:27

DS has got his AS results today from the modules he sat in January

They are all fine ...apart form one and we knew it was not going to be great

we had asked that ds not take it as he had really not grasped mechanics and had asked to move class . Unfortunately they insisted that as he was set one he take it - despite the three other sets not taking it until may/june.

Anyway whats done is done.

The results as a whole were not fabulous for mechanics and school are advising re-sitting the module for the majority.

I would be fine with this had i not read on here that oxbridge will know - if they are re sits.....

Any advice or knowledge on the subject gratefully received.

If he is repeating they need to know by Monday latest!

Yes Cambridge ask for all results. (And I think that's whether the school 'certifies' them or not). Don't know about Oxford.

Currently doing secondary school open days and some schools saying they will be passing on all results, whether retakes or not.

The other thing is - Unis not stupid and tend to know/guess by dates given/not given whether a mark is likely to be a resit.

Border I would encourage your daughter to apply if she wants to (the deadline is Oct 15th) being 1% off an A* in an A level taken over a year is not going to automatically put Cambridge off. My DCs go to a state school that has a good record of sending kids to Oxbridge, the main reason they are successful is that the school encourages kids to apply. Its only one choice out of 5 and if you don't apply you can guarantee you won't get in.

Oxford/Cambridge deadline 15 October.

I would get your daughter to apply Border, she has absolutely nothing to lose. Cambridge are anxious to receive applications from schools such as your daughters. Look on the Cambridge website and/or phone/email the admissions officer for the college she is interested in. She will have to give her module results at some point. Her result sounds very good to me, esp taken over one year.

Thanks everyone, that's really helpful. I showed these threads to my daughter and she is definitely going to go for it! (I think it needed someone else to say it though) It was maths by the way.

update

Just a quick update

DS has applied to cambridge and received an email by return asking for

  1. another little 'why i chose cambridge' section
  2. various other one word/tick box questions
  3. actual module grades ( figures) and whether or not they were re sits

ds and friends not chuffed but some friends intend lying

ds said not shamed of re sits and wont lie ( proud!)

Borders has your dd had this?

thepumpkineater · 04/10/2009 21:02

I wouldn't have thought lying is a particularly good idea.

GoppingOtter · 04/10/2009 21:09

no!! But i think they assume every candidate will not be checked out

they do ask for certificates but i dont think they show whether module was re sit

Milliways · 05/10/2009 22:04

Certificates show all modules - so both grades and dates if a re-sit was taken.

thepumpkineater · 05/10/2009 22:20

I was thinking that! Glad you confirmed it Milliways.

I don't think they are trying to catch anyone out. Lots of students re-take one or two modules. Remember it is potential they are looking for.

BoffinMum · 05/10/2009 22:31

Don't lie in any emails.
Also don't fret about the A thing. Personally speaking I will be more keen to see how they do in interview. The whole A thing is deeply scary to me as a concept. As if our applicants aren't stressed enough!

GoppingOtter · 05/10/2009 22:34

he says some of his mates are planning on the odd omission!

ds has sent his

even getting the picture to fit caused stress

lap of the admissions tutors gods now

GoppingOtter · 05/10/2009 22:37

milliways it does NOT say resits on the certificates

GoppingOtter · 05/10/2009 22:43

not edexcel anyway

Milliways · 05/10/2009 22:44

Sorry - maybe I remembered wrong!

One of DD's friends took a GCSE early and got a D. She re-took and got an A. Her certificates show both (but she re-took the final another year so maybe that is why??)

She was gutted as her GCSE certs show a string of A & A*s ...... and a D.

DD re-sat 2 AS language oral exams - I honestly can't say what the final certs show. If they have not been cashed in then they are listed on a "results" sheet. Does that not have to be submitted if it shows other grades that are "wanted" ??

thepumpkineater · 05/10/2009 22:50

At my DCs school their AS levels are not certificated until their A2s are, if you see what I mean. So if they have re-taken modules, would that not be shown on the final results sheet, if not certificate? Do you have to show that at some stage when enrolling at university? Agree that they probably can't be arsed to check every module etc.

Still don't think it is a good thing to lie though. Doesn't bode well for the future in any circumstances.(Realise your son isn't lying though Otter )

GoppingOtter · 05/10/2009 22:51

ds re took a maths module
his january certificate almost becomes obsolete i think as the june one just shows june result
thing is..... if they asked you why one module was later etc etc etc
slippery slope!

i said to ds just after he has submitted supplemenatry bit by
email..... 'imagine how your mates would feel now if the had lied..'

not worth the stress!

GoppingOtter · 05/10/2009 22:53

thepumkineater

he is waaay too straight!

now if it had been me at 17 ......different story - give me temptation i will usually give in to it..then lie awake at night regretting it!
