Keep my nose out or speak to his tutor?

DS#1 was given a 'yellow slip' yesterday which is used to show that he has missed or handed in incomplete hw 3 times. Also means he's on report for 5 days and had a lunch time detention. DS insists that all he had done was hand in 1 piece of work incomplete (he missed out a page). He is very cross and upset.

I am perfectly capable of beleiving that DS has left out a few salient facts but is it worth mentioning it to his tutor at parents' evening next week?

Shouldn't DS check it out himself? Surely the teacher can tell him what he hasn't done if he asks, then he can check if he or they have got it wrong.

If you get nothing that way, maybe ask what it was next week, so you can see if there is a particular subject that he has a problem with at the mo.

Apparently DS did ask his head of year but she 'ignored' him. He doesn't have a problem with any subject. And normally does his hw with no prompting which is what is confusing me.

I'd suggest ds has another go at sorting it out himself (supported by a note from you in his logbook).

If no joy from that, I would mention it to his tutor. Your ds obviously believes he is right, and he might be.

I'd let him try again at sorting it out himself but if no joy I'd mention it when you have the meeting with his tutor. DD got a detention a couple of weeks ago for not doing her Maths homework -she had done it but couldn't find it as it was with all the other junk in the plastic sleeve in her planner. I wrote a note in her planner saying she had done it. I was happy for her to do the detention for not handing it in on time but wanted her teacher to know she had done it IYSWIM. The plastic sleeve is now junk free so hopefully a lesson in organisational skills was learnt!

OK. Thanks. He tried again to speak to his head of year but no joy. We are seeing his tutor next week anyway and I think I will mention it.

Sounds odd to me. I'm a secondary school teacher.

Were all missing hwks from the same or different subjects. Who put him on report? In our school, it is done by either head of year or head of dept, but parents are always informed, as they have to sign the report

fizzbuzz · 27/11/2008 18:34

However, it is possible to miss or slip up with one or even 2 homeworks, but 3 might just be pushing it a bit!

Head of year fizzbuzz. But no, we weren't informed or asked to sign anything. It was geography hw that he missed. But only one lot apparently.

I do feel a bit remote from the school. So different from primary. Looking forward to parents evening, just to get a handle on things.
