DD1 had 2 x 45 min math papers today.
On second paper the examiner/invigilator or whoever came up to her and said " dont you need to finish the first one ? ".
This totally threw her because the first was a calclator paper and the second non calculator.
She said yes ok, but then couldn`t obviously use her calculator.

Secondly at the end of one her papers she was told to stop writing and put her calculator down .
DD1 put her hand up and said excuse me i have another 5 mins.
She was told not to question but to STOP writing and put her pen and calculator dowm, which she obviously did.
In dds words, the man then approached the lady and said that my dd1 had another 5 mins because she was resitting and in a differrent year and sitting a differrent paper , by which time she was told she could use her pen only ! The last calculator question was worth 4 marks and she couldnt answer it because of this.

DD rang me at home time in tears and in between meetings i managed to speak to the examinations officer , but only knew about the lost 5 mins at the end at this point.
She was ever so nice and said she would look into it and write something on her entry.

It is only now that she has been able to tell me about the interruption on her second paper. She was doing fine and i think its unfair that she was asked to go back to her first paper when then had started the second paper-especially as 1 was a calculator and the other not.It completely threw her.

Without going on too much i want to have some idea of how important this is to dd.
She is in the top set for most subjects, but was in set 6 of 7 for math.
She was predicted an f at best.
Wanting to be a teacher she knows how important this is and has worked so so very hard they have moved her up 4 sets and she got a c in the first module and was 3 marks off a c in the next module. She decided to resit this and has revised most days for 3 months ! She even gave up her dancing and her drama to revise. Do you think the examinations officer will really write something-it could mean the differrence between a c and a d again ! Should i do anything else ?

Sounds strange that they didn't take in the first paper at the end of its time.

Something the examination officer really needs to look into.

Didn't your DD know what the time allocation was and all the correct procedures? I think it is very unfortunate that she was so easily thrown by the intervention and that this made the difference in the last 5 minutes of the exam.

I would be really surprised if it made the difference between a C and a D, and I would be reluctant to make too much of a fuss at this stage as it gives the message to your DD that her best isn't good enough.

You can wait until the results come out, and if she is borderline ask to see the script to see if this 5 minutes turned to be crucial. By all means record the anomoly so that there is some grounds for appeal if it comes down to that.

But it really could make the differrence between a c and a d.
She couldnt answer the last question because she was told to stop writing 5 minutes BEFORE her allocated time. Then she was told she COULD and apologised to ,but they had taken away calculators and only had a minute left. The question was something that entailed the use of a calclator worth 4 or 5 marks and because she was told to stop writing she couldnt answer it.
If this hadb`t happened she would have been able to work it out.
Last time she missed a c by 2 marks so this would be a little more than unfortunate .

My mum is an examinations officer - If spoken nicely to she works really hard to sort out situations like this - her invigilators are often hopeless about what they should be doing

Try not to worry

Thanks yurtgirl. The officer was really nice on the phone tbh.
