Homework online. Is this common practice?

DS#1 does his maths hw on line. Which is great for him as he is good at maths but scruffy. This way he gets good marks because the teacher can read all his answers .

Is this a common thing now? I'd never heard of it before.

Never heard of it, DS did have to go on a website for his Geography homework and do quizz or something,

what about kids without PC's?

Blandmum · 21/10/2008 15:26

Yes, dd does it for maths.

You can also used a system called SAM learning that is online. What the kids don't always know is that not only can we see how well thy have done, but also how long it took them, and how many tries it took them!

Re the kids without PCs, most, if not all, schools will make PCs available for the kids in pre and post school homework clubs, and well as giving them access at break and lunch times

Oh yes, we clocked that mb The site we use tells you on your scorecard. DS is now seeing it as a matter of pride to do it right first time asap! Which is in itself a freaking miracle

Yes DS1 uses www.mymaths.co.uk it's quite a good system except he clicked on the wrong thing last week and did the wrong piece of work so got a detention, a bit mean when he did homework just the wrong piece.

Its amazing, isn't it, that people will take more notice of stuff on the computer than in RL. >

OrmIrian · 21/10/2008 15:30

Yes that's the one DS uses.

My son, just started year 7 (high school) does all his maths homework on-line. I think it is great. For one, the teacher can read his answers (handwriting a big issue) and see how long it took him to do it and how many tries.

Luckily for him, his mental maths is fantastic and, even though with some homework, he can use a calculator, he would rather calculate it in his head (last week was decimal multiplication and division (i.e. 0.25 x 1 = easy one, for example). I wish I could write a note saying that he did not use a calculator for any of the workings out (although I did use a calculate for speed when they got a bit more complicated so I could check his answers).

Luckily, for him, he is also able to use the computer for his English/Geography, etc. homework that involves a lot of handwriting.

For him, this means that the teacher can actually read what he has written which is a good thing!!

It can be common. We don't do it online in our school, but they do have CDs that they can find their homework tasks on.

Online hw is an easy way out for the teacher. It gets marked automatically!
