DD was thrilled!

pipsqueak · 15/10/2008 00:30

dd1 mightily relieved too . i hadnt realised how much these had been playing on her mind til i saw the utter relief when told teh news -- thank goodness .. just need them to scrap the KS1 ones as well for dd2 this year

saffiw · 15/10/2008 00:40

dd is yr 9 and very pissed off as she will be the last year that has to take them

pipsqueak · 15/10/2008 00:47

the school will probably still test them - utterly obsessed with testing sadly at dd1 school but they are immune to school tests they are so frequent!

pipsqueak · 15/10/2008 00:48

poor dd of saffiw

mumblechum · 17/10/2008 11:25

Are you sure, saffiw?

DS is yr 9 & has been told they're not taking them.

DocBunches · 17/10/2008 11:31

Agreed Mumblechum.

I also have a Y9 DS and our understanding is that they have definitely been scrapped with immediate effect.

ChloeAnderson · 20/10/2008 18:28

I'm an English teacher and can confirm that they are not being tested at all this year (unless your school is mean and sets other tests anyway).

I'm thrilled that the bloody things have gone. They are so different to GCSEs, they are actually much harder. I had a girl who was one of the brightest kids I'd ever taught in 10 years get a 10 out of 18 for the Shakespeare paper last year (a level 5). She just achieved a top A* in Shakespeare coursework.

You can now have fun in Y9 and actually get them to like Shakespeare and other fantastic writers, and not put them off for life.....

I was so cross to hear a politician on Any Questions (radio 4) saying how necessary the other SATS were - because schools have to assess their pupils' achievements and progress, and because schools need objective assessment too.

Now forgive me, but throughout my school career my parents got regular reports about my progress, both academic and practical - based on the observations made by the teachers who taught me, and their ongoing assessment of my work during the term/academic year (as well as end of term/year exams as I got older). It's ridiculous to imply, as this politician did, that before SATS there was no way of knowing how your child was progressing at school!

Year 9 SAT's were an absolutely nightmare for me. I struggled to understand why my peers were telling me they weren't important yet i worked my hardest throughout the SATs period. It reduces alot of stress now they have gone.
