Will you increase tutoring hours to help DC pass maths GCSE?

DS struggles with maths, works well with tutor but not so well alone; he said he finds it hard. It is disheartening to see. Thinking of increasing tutoring hours? We can afford it.

Maybe I am going to have to learn the topics to help them; but I didn’t grow up in England and sometimes methodology are different.

Current teacher at school isn’t good (confirmed by other parents too)

Any words of wisdom and encouragement would be appreciated.

Last Mock was a 2.

Of course — this is the order our maths specialist works through for Foundation 2→4:

  1. Number first: place value, ordering, rounding, estimating — everything else sits on this.
  2. FDP: fractions, decimals, percentages and converting between them — worth a huge chunk of Foundation marks.
  3. Ratio and proportion (sharing in a ratio, best buys).
  4. Algebra basics: collecting terms, expanding brackets, solving simple equations.
  5. Money, time, measures and converting units.
  6. Area, perimeter and volume — big marks, mostly formula + practice.
  7. Averages and data: mean/median/mode/range, reading charts and tables.
  8. Angles and basic geometry (triangle facts, polygons).
  9. Simple graphs and coordinates.
10. Basic probability. 11. For the push to 4/5: Pythagoras, basic trigonometry, standard form and indices.

If he works through these in order with past-paper questions on each, the marks add up quickly. Happy to answer questions on any of them.

Thanks ☺️

Maybe it's more independent practice that needs to go with the tuition.
There are some very good Maths websites out there like Corbett Maths and GCSE Maths Lab.
