Year 12 - Further Maths or EPQ for Medicine?

DD has just started Year 12 at a new 6th form. She got 9 Grade 9 and 1 Grade 8 at GCSE. She did Statistics and Further Maths as well as Maths and got 9s in all of them.

She is considering applying for Medicine (although not definite) and so has started A Levels in Biology, Chemistry and Maths. She has also started Further Maths due to her Maths enjoyment. College also offer an EPQ and she attended the introductory talk for it this week.

She is not getting any guidance from her new 6th form as to what she should keep doing and what she should drop, especially if aiming for Medicine. Most uni details seem to focus on a 3 Grade offer and nothing else, so is it better to drop FM and EPQ to maximise 3 grades?

She may not go for Medicine and do a Maths Uni degree and the presumably FM would be handy.

Why do people do an EPQ?!

She doesn’t need clinical work experience. She might benefit from having something to help her figure out if it’s for her or not. But her volunteering and working with the public will be perfect for conversations at medicine interview if she gets to the point that is relevant. Clearly a remarkable young woman! I hope she finds a fulfilling career whatever that may turn out to be .

Thanks @Makingsenseofitall - yes I think we need to find someone who knows about this stuff to talk to her. Should have sorted it earlier but it is our first rodeo and we didnt know what we don't know!

It has made me realise that most of the thrust of guidance from school has been around passing gcses and not a lot about what next!

I think she is great - she will always do her best - but don't want her to be on the back foot because of our lack of experience!

You won’t find better knowledge than on mumsnet. Get thee onto the medicine threads. I learned soooo much from them!
