Congratulations all parents/carers who have secured placement for their families in Outstanding or good state schools over Independents for the coming years.

Oh how jealous we private school parents are!

Hoping to secure a place currently on waiting list. Fingers crossed! It’s going to be a long (costly) three years ahead at all independent schools! Enter - Lucy Powell and Labour 3 years to go. Lucy Powell.

Catchment and FSM is not what makes a school a good school.

Agree. My point is that Lucy Powell could and is accused of playing the state system re ‘best’ state schools. But the school in question is a good non selective one. And not the one people move house for or cheat admissions to get in

As I said, it is very easy to be critical of private schools when you are sending your kids to a state school that manages to send multiple pupils to Oxbridge every year despite being non selective.

I don’t think my old school ever managed to get a single pupil into Oxbridge despite being the ‘better’ of the two in the town. Neither now even have a sixth form.

I was that single parent running my own business which has long opening hours. Others in my sector make them same choices.

I was also that single parent with a business and there were several others. It’s not unusual at all.

There are huge misconceptions about why people choose private schools - every time this topic is discussed the vitriol comes out. My children board as their dad is in the army. We have lived in 10 houses in my 13yos life. Boarding gives them stability. Other people choose private as state cannot meet SEN needs or they are single parents who need the support of longer days to carry on working and not claim benefits. Others gain scholarships or bursaries. I want every family to be able to access the education they need to succeed - it shouldn’t be a race to the bottom.

You do of course know that there are state boarding schools , boarding doesn’t automatically mean independent schooling.
