Hi

Looking for sixth-form colleges or A-level options in Reading or Oxford area we are open to any good advices around these. The preferred subjects are biology - chemistry - pe and maths. We are trying to participate in as many open events as we can, but at the moment we couldn't list much schools. Seeking for advices please. Thanks

State or private?

If state I know people who have chosen Henley College and weee happy.

State, I have a shortlist but we still want to go more open events. So I wondered if someone come up with a school name that I couldn’t have thought of. Are they happy in Henley College?

Oxford has the following college:
Activate Learning City of Oxford College

And the following state Sixth Forms (Alphabetical)
Cheney
Cherwell
Greyfriars
Matthew Arnold
Oxford Spires
The Swan School
The Oxford Academy* *Not certain what their Sixth Form offer is, might be sport heavy
Some city students might also go to Wheatley Park. There is a decent bus service from Oxford.

(People will come along and tell you that Cherwell is the best. FWIW, it's also a very large Sixth Form (300 per year group) with large class sizes in the popular subjects.)

You can look at school's average scores and their value added here:

I hope your young person finds the education that is the right one for them!

Cherwell.

hahabahbag · 23/07/2026 20:14

Check catchments, some areas do restrict out of area applications

LadyLapsang · 23/07/2026 20:25

If you are near Maidenhead you could also look at Holyport College, state day and boarding. Smaller than Cherwell and they have a partnership with Eton College so students can row at Dorney Lake.

Mrsmum09 · 24/07/2026 06:53

Even in sixth forms? I don’t know that. We are told by so many people that there’s no catchment for sixth forms.

There is no coordinated admissions for sixth forms so young people can apply for numerous options and then decide which offer to accept when they have their GCSE results.
