North London Secondary Schools - co-ed or girls

Live in North London, where secondary school choices are crazy.
Our son went down a fairly traditional academic route and is now at a strongly academic school, but our daughter (currently Year 5) feels like quite a different personality and we’re struggling to work out what environment might suit her best.
She is very confident, creative and energetic. She loves performing and being on stage, throws herself into extracurricular activities ( music, drama, dance, chess, rugby, art etc) and tends to be very independent and determined. She naturally gravitates towards leadership roles and enjoys organising things herself.
Academically though, she is not especially driven in the conventional sense, and we’ve found any attempts at tutoring tend to end in frustration all round.
I suppose what I’m trying to understand is what type of secondary school works well for children who are bright, capable and highly motivated when engaged, but perhaps not naturally academic in the traditional exam-focused sense.
My worry is that if she ends up somewhere without enough structure, extracurricular opportunities or stimulation outside the classroom, she may not thrive & go off the rails.
Would really value hearing from parents who have had children with a similar profile and found schools that suited them.

Queenswood sounds ideal from your description of your daughter. We know quite a few kids there and they are all happy. The extra-curricular opportunities are insane and they're all encouraged to achieve high grades, but it's not a pushy school academically as far as I know.

Although I personally prefer coed as I think it's a more natural environment.

thank you. Yes someone else recommended Queenswood too . Will definitely take a look. We saw St Margerets too which she really liked. On state schools, does anyone have any insights on music entry for Camden School for Girls or St Marylebone for drama entry? It's quite hard to unpick their criteria

Have a look at RMS (Royal Masonic). Not sure if it's too far for you.

XelaM · 23/06/2026 14:51

If you're looking at music entry- are you not considering DAO or Latymer?

RatherBeOnVacation · 23/06/2026 15:33

Another vote for Queenswood. Perfect for this type of girl.

Camden has a music test which I believe is a listening test. I think they play different things and then ask questions and the answers are multiple choice. The three candidates who score the highest get offered a music place, the next 50 get called in to audition on their chosen instrument (not sure if that includes voice or not, I imagine that it does). They then select a further 5 of their top ranked candidates to offer places to. Some people obviously turn these places down, so there is still a chance from the waiting list.
For St M it says on the website that students have to create and prepare a monologue to perform. Not sure if that's just for next year's intake or if it's the same every year, and I'm just taking that from the website.

@cansadavidaloca is this St Margarets Bushey or Hampstead? The Hampstead one isnt very academic. Art and music are good though. I wouldn't say drama is hugely at the forefront.

cansadavidaloca · 24/06/2026 09:38

thank you Backonceagainnow Looked at St Margeret's in Bushey.. How about Hampstead one - is it hard to get into? How about South Hampstead is it especially hard to get into?

If you're looking for a great drama and music departments at state school - are you looking at Latymer? They also have a music entry i believe

cansadavidaloca · 24/06/2026 14:33

Thank you. I feel like it might be that bit too far as we are in North London.

Latymer (the grammar school) in Edmonton is in North London

I think (according to Chat GPT) they still offer 20 music places. Worth calling them. They certainly did when my daughter applied a few years ago.

Dame Alice Owen also offer music places and that's a great school by all accounts.

Stowickthevast · 24/06/2026 18:18

Latymer do offer music places but you have to take their normal 11+ - English, Maths & VR- and an additional music test. They offer 20 places where you have to get in the top 900 rather than the top 650 to progress. I think it would still be a challenge for a less academic child as it's very competitive. It looks like 2027 applications have already closed so it may be too late.

I think the drama & music places at St Marylebone are also very competitive - I'm not sure how many they take. If you're a church goer that's another route to St Marylebone.

It's in their admissions arrangements. Page 6, number 3 of their oversubscription criteria.
