Seeing as he’s been in M&S clothes for 13 years… I’ve never once thought about the washing and quality - it’s just always been easy to do five shirts and 2 pairs of trousers a week…

Now it’s business attire so suits and shirts and being on trend is very much a factor so not sure M&S will cut it !

Short sleeve shirts with the same wash and shake with no ironing please but with a decent price point and slim cut….

Suits - can you machine wash them? I tend to wash his blazer every three weeks or so. He rides his bike to school which will continue so trousers need to be durable, machine washable and have elastane mixed in for a little stretch.

I need to know these things before I let him loose at the shops… mind you he hates shopping.

Single mum with no other half wearing a suit to work so a bit clueless. And he needs these in place for induction end of the month.
There’s still going to be growing… plenty as he was a later bloomer so does anyone do let down hems?

Shamelessly bumping this as I also need to know!

Next is your friend here , got my son a three piece suit for 6 form here years ago .. he ended up on the front of their 6 form poster 😂

Daisymay2 · 09/06/2026 17:05

When D S 1 went to 6th form I bought a Moss Bros suit, he had grown out of it by Easter. Good job I refused the expensive jobs he claimed his friends were getting. We then moved to a washable wool M&S suit, two pairs of trousers. Much much better, trousers washed weekly, jackets washed for holidays. Did the same for DS2.

MMAMPWGHAP · 09/06/2026 17:06

Next. Get a basic colour cheap one and you’ll be able to replace bits of it as needed.

UsedToBeAtAmber · 09/06/2026 17:07

Ds left 6th form last year. M&s do a washable suit. I would get the jacket and two pairs of trousers m or you could get something from vinted.

clary · 09/06/2026 17:19

Agree M&S or Next. Ds had a fancy prom suit which was dry clean, and then a much more practical M&S suit which was washable.

Now he needs a graduation suit which is a mare as he works out and is muscular so none of the slim cuts fit.

Glittertwins · 09/06/2026 17:34

Yes, M&S and Next are popular and last well.

TheCoolTiger · 09/06/2026 17:52

I’ve just bought 2 M&S washable suits and DS will likely alternate each week. One navy and one dark indigo (some sort of ‘indigo’ anyway!) which is a slightly brighter blue and very popular with existing sixth formers

I would bet every single one of them will be in Next or M&S, so stuff on trend! Both are excellent value and

Agree with buying two pairs of trousers and one jacket, and make sure you get a decent clothes hanger and encourage him to hang the jacket up properly each evening.

Joolay · 09/06/2026 17:53

Whatever you buy, buy one jacket and two pairs of trousers minimum

Yes, definitely everyone in next door Marks & Spencer. They try and look really smart till about November then they don't give a fuck.

MaidsRoom · 09/06/2026 17:59

Most suits are dry clean only, both jacket and trousers. But as above you can buy some from certain brands which are designed to be washable.

AuntyBulgaria · 09/06/2026 18:10

I bought a Next suit. But he has never worn the jacket. Wears the trousers and shirt and tie with a quarter zip jumper over the top. This is what all the boys wear and he has never been told that it's not appropriate for business wear.

"Certain brands". Lolol

we got ours from zara, nice cut, looked smart. we were able to buy more trousers along the way and the blazer lasted all the way through sixth without looking too worn. the trousers were machine washable not the blazer though

Thanks all - I bit the bullet and hit M&S again
so having ordered a blue suit, I’ve also ordered a pack of 3 blue school shirts in a 16.5 which I assume is a huge collar
cheap as chips compare to the identical men’s blue shirts!
and I’ve hit up Vinted for some ties - who knew they were so expensive.

I sobbed when in lower school he had to have a PE shirt (£28) and a rugby shirt (£48) - they don’t follow three branded items rule at all.
Now trying not to sob at cost of suit but dividing by number of days wear coming in at 52p a day Grin

If it’s any consolation, I sold the first one from Moss Bros at the second hand uniform sale! And, a washable suit saves a fortune on dry cleaning bills.
Good luck to DS in GCSEs and beyond.
