Townley grammar

Hi!
We’re approximately 7 miles away from Townley grammar school. I feel confused when I look at the catchment , is it as the crow flies they use for admissions or not? Also I’ve heard that no one has received an offer from the waiting list for Townley this year , does anyone have any information regarding this?

Many thanks!

It seems clear on the website; after LAC and EHCP naming the school, there are 20 PP places where a lower 11+ score is accepted, then 180 places for the top scores in the borough, then after that up to 24 places (PAN of 224) allocated based on a straight-line distance.

Are you in the borough? How high is your DD likely to score?

Most of the kids going to the grammar schools in Bexley Borough seem to be coming in from outside the borough. A relative's DD got a place at Townley and she had no tight friend group because all the girls in her year group were not from Bexleyheath or nearby.

The 180 places are not for Townley grammar specifically , it’s for all grammar schools in Bexley . Anyway my question was if they use as the crow flies and why the waiting list doesn’t seem to be moving this year in the same way it has in previous years. Anyone with insight could you let me know please .

That’s interesting though about having no tight friendship group 🤔 worth considering .

I guess if fewer than 180 of the top scorers list the school then that figure will be lower for that school. How many schools are involved?

It also says distance is measured, as I said in my first post, in a straight line, which is the same as as the crow flies I think? This is for girls who have achieved a certain mark tho.

Thank you, that’s what I was confused about if “ straight line” is the same as “as the crow flies” but I guess it must be.

There may be less wait list movement as less people are opting to go independent

Elthammummy · 05/06/2026 17:14

That’s what I think too but it seems strange that not one single person has been offered a place from the waiting list ( that’s the rumour anyway). Usually around 40 -50 people get an offer from the waiting list looking at previous data.Wonder when people will have to make a definite decision regarding independent schools.

I think this is the tip of the ice-berg regarding the effects of VAT on Private Schools will do for access to the most academic schools. Thus, what Phillipson and Reeves have done is make Private and Selective Education more Exclusive and less attainable exactly designed to create angst and envy among families.

This being the exact opposite to what they said they claimed to want to do this is not through Incompetence but deliberate. After the deliberate act to make Grammar Schools more exclusive enables them to enact a narrative to come for 'Grammar Schools' next hence they can now state that Grammar schools have become the de-facto choice for parents with income around £150K-200K who may have been priced out of Independent Education

. These very people being hated by those in Government but still can be controlled or managed through taxation . The 'Goal' for this Government or the Progressives within it being schools that are identical from Doncaster- Sevonoaks this being evident when kids will wear identical school uniforms across the country and look like Prison Uniforms !

My son goes to QE and waiting lists seem to vary a lot year by year. I wouldn't be surprised if movement happens later once families make final decisions about independent school places. Also, in selective schools it's quite common for students to travel from a wide area, so friendship groups don't necessarily depend on living nearby.
