Can my daughter get special consideration after concussion before GCSE maths resit?

My dd is resitting her gcse maths for the third time. She’s put a lot of work in this time round as she has been told she may not be able to continue her studies at college if she doesn’t pass.

Unfortunately, she flew off her skateboard last night going downhill, hit a lamppost and was knocked unconscious briefly.
She was taken to a&e and had scans. Thankfully she only has concussion and whiplash and was discharged early this morning. She seems okay but still has quite a swollen head and headache but plans to go in tomorrow for her exam.

would she be able to apply for special consideration if I get a copy of her discharge notes from the hospital?

Potentially yes. Send the info to the exams officer.

The exams officer will send a copy of her discharge notes to the awarding body. However, don’t get your hopes up as any uplift, if awarded, is tiny.

Email the exams office with details of exactly what happened and the medical notes from A&E. If accepted the increase in marks is likely to be 1-2%.

Looking at her now I don’t think she’s going to be able to do the exam at all but thank you

Rest is important when recovering from concussion - this includes mental rest. A feature of concussion can be an inability to concentrate, she may not be well enough to do the exam at all

If she does get in contact Exam
pffucer before and ask for emergency rest breaks during the exam. As well as for special cons too. They’ll apply but can’t confirm what will be given.

You can apply and submit your evidence but you won’t know if she’s given any consideration until the results.
We applied and the results had an asterisk next to all the grades and googling said this means it was applied but I still don’t know for sure and I have no idea how much was given

edited to add it was not a ‘star’ grade as the asterisk was next to every one and she did not get a B* as they did not exist!

If 'm reading the timetable correctly, there are three papers. She's already taken one, and the third will be on June 10th. If that's correct, based on your update at 22:13 she might be best submitting her discharge notes and missing tomorrow's paper. The exam board may give her a grade based on her performance in the two papers she is able to sit.

I'd contact her college first thing in the morning and ask them.

Yes and she might get 2 or 3 marks extra. It’s hardly worth bothering, but I guess if she is borderline every mark helps.

Thanks everyone. She did go in the end and I emailed the college this morning. They are going to give her extra rest breaks and apply for special consideration. She’s only ever a few marks off passing so those extra points will help a lot.
She is very spaced out so not looking good but she insisted on going.
She never usually skates home from work (she’s a skate coach) but was desperate to get back quickly to revise.
