My dd has done gcse art at one school component 1. Was told is currently at a 6. New school she did component 2 was told working hard and great final piece. The new school has marked both components and given a raw mark that would be a 3 for both?! Should I be in the right to appeal

She’s in year 11

You need to ask for a review. Maybe a clerical error was made or the marking scheme not applied properly? Unfortunately, art is super subjective in the way it's marked. Definitely ask for a review though

TravisWritingCoach · 20/05/2026 09:49

I would not start with the word appeal. Ask the school for the component marks, the assessment objectives breakdown, and whether both components were internally standardised by the art department. Then ask what evidence explains the change from a predicted/working 6 to a raw mark around 3. You need the mark trail first; then you can decide whether a review is realistic.

XelaM · 20/05/2026 09:59

Are you sure the raw marks translate to a 3?

You need to multiply Component 1 mark by x1.5 and add Component 2 mark. That will give you the total mark out 180. Does it translate to a 3 based on last year's grade boundaries? That sounds very low to me and quite unusual if everything is completed.

Cantbelieveit80 · 21/05/2026 05:05

We are in exactly the same scenario with dd. Works out a 3 if looking at grade boundries for last 3 years. She has asked for mark scheme and can appeal. All that work to not pass :-(

Oh no 😧 that's awful. She needs to speak to the teachers to ask how the mark scheme was applied. Maybe they made a mistake and missed some pages/ some of her work? Was her mock result for Component1 a 3 as well? I think someone on here mentioned that you're not allowed to get lower than in your mock unless the work since the mock was of much lower quality. Surely it wouldn't be in the school's best interest to have students fail? I think it's also possible to ask for your coursework to get marked by another school (again according to someone on Mumsnet).

Smartiepants79 · 21/05/2026 06:43

Who has worked out that it is a 3? You or the school? I agree that you need to check that you’re working it out right! They give the raw score not the actual score. There is a calculation to do to get an actual grade.

Smartiepants79 · 21/05/2026 06:47

What exam board and what are her marks? Some one might be able to work it out for you.

I have done the calculations and a 3.

What marks/scores have you got?

Very strange if this was completely unexpected. What was her mock grade? Surely she has had feedback on a possible grade for her portfolio over the last 10 months?

depends on the exam board, it’s a different equation for us.,

OP tell us the marks and the board, it does sound like you could have made an error

Yes definitely works out at either lowest 4 or a 3. Total scale came to 231 out of 480 AQA.
its just so complicated because it’s old school where she did it versus new school. New school got another school to look at it and unfortunately agreed with new school raw mark but I still think something is off?

I’m just surprised that this is a surprise. My Dd does textiles so I think is similar (?) she’s know since January at least what her work was looking likely to get her. Her raw grades are exactly what she was expecting. Has she not had any indication? Mock score?

XelaM · 21/05/2026 10:08

Really sorry - this must be so stressful for your daughter! How can they explain such a mark discrepancy with the old school and also why didn't they tell her how to improve her work to get the marks up?! Has she completed everything including all the final pieces and they've definitely not missed any of her work?

JTro · 21/05/2026 12:25

My DD is alsovery upset. She was predicted 7, after exam was told by the teacher that she has greatly improved. Her raw marks are borderline 5/6.

Yes course work finished and exam. I think they have overinflated at old school so will have to settle with hopefully a 4 now but won’t know until actual grades come out. It’s such a rubbish way to assess and mark isn’t it!

It awful that they give ‘grades’ out but then use raw marks . Maybe they should start off at the beginning with raw marks and actually mark work as it goes through each course section. A lot of kids are going to get a shock unless schools are upfront with them from the beginning it’s an awful way to do it. Not just kids but teachers too.

Yes just that she was working at a 6 and her mocks were told a 6. With final prediction after exam a 7.
Theyve obviously over inflated at one school and under at the other. Just hoping she gets a 4 now. Really rubbish way of doing it.

We have started the process now, It wasn't just ny daughter who was appealing. She has been with a teacher to check all her work is there. Someone will now look and see if marked fairly.
