One of the best ways to judge a school is watch how the boys dress to and from school and what the behaviour is like. Obviously, be realistic - they're groups of children and boys at that (very physical and noisy as they are gawd bless em) - but compare with other schools. Perhaps even board the same bus as a bunch of them. I find them reasonably well behaved and smart, I have spoken to boys - with my young son with me so not creepy - to ask them what they think of the school. I've been told, 'It's strict' (Bingo!) and that 'Yeah, I like it'. Have a look at the sports offered - boys need exercise - and track the GCSE results over the years and see it the catchment has shrunk (i.e. parents want the school and they're no longer taking children from miles away whose parents forgot to fill in the form). It's a few years into being, the reputation is more established. Go around it, speak to the staff and pupils, communicate with the other parents going around and listen to the questions they ask.
