Was anyone else not expecting these at all? DD got emailed them directly today and is in tears as she hasn't done as well as her mock. I know they are subject to moderation etc etc, but realistically I can't see the grade boundaries moving much.

First exam of the exam period is tomorrow, so this is not great timing!

Hello, yes, got them but son not sure what they are out of!he got 59 and 62 )AQA board. Thinks he defo has a 6 which he would be pleased with. Sorry your daughter feels hers wasn’t what she wanted. It seems quite unhelpful in a way cos they can still go up or down and can knock your confidence before doing anything else

Rosessmelllovely · 06/05/2026 19:34

JCQ rules state that all coursework marks have to be given to students before they’re sent to the exam board so that students have the option to appeal if they feel their work hasn’t been marked properly. If school didn’t do this, it would be malpractice.

Stowickthevast · 06/05/2026 22:14

Mine is being given hers on Friday but they don't get the final mark until results day, post moderation. I'm not sure how much movement there is but would be interesting to know.

She got part of her drama back last week - the log - and it was lower than she was hoping for, but the grade boundaries are so narrow, there's only 3 marks for an 8 and 3 marks for a 7. She's hoping it goes up as the teacher said she marjed it strictly.

Roseyposeypie · 06/05/2026 23:44

My yr11 gets marks back Friday I think. I agree that the timing is tricky as their first exam is Monday so I feel it could knock their confidence if it’s not what they’re hoping for.

Does this mean my DS will / shoukd get some drama marks back in the next few weeks? Is that for the performance?

Rosessmelllovely · 07/05/2026 06:14

They should really have got most of them by now, the exam board deadlines for marks to be uploaded is Friday 15th May and schools should be giving a two week window for appeals. Students should all be given appeal information, otherwise it’s malpractice on the part of the school.

XelaM · 07/05/2026 06:44

Does anyone know if for Food Tech NEA1 and NEA2 they will get their marks? The teacher apparently told them she can't disclose the marks, but how can you then appeal?

The JCQ rule for this came in in 2017 so all schools should be doing this. Get in touch with the exams officer and query it, and with the exam board or JCQ if they refuse. Your child is entitled to know their marks and to appeal them before they are given to the exam board, it’s the only chance they get to appeal coursework marks. I’m an exams officer and every one of the teaching staff here know the rules. They are committing malpractice if they don’t do it.

RollonMay17 · 07/05/2026 08:10

On what basis can an appeal be made though if you don’t know the grade boundaries? My dd knows what grade she’s been getting for previous coursework but I don’t think she knows what raw score that was. I’m not sure we’d know whether we should be appealing.

Thank you. Unfortunately, there has been a complete mess with the Food Tech NEAs and teaching at my daughter's school, as one teacher was dismissed midway through the year and the new one I think has no idea what the rules are 🤦‍♀️ The NEA1s that were still with the old teacher also got misplaced in the process. Absolutely no idea what is going on. I have emailed the exam officer, but she's usually not quick to respond.

Stowickthevast · 07/05/2026 10:39

@toodisorganisedforschool She got the devising log mark back which is marked internally and then moderated.

She hasn't had her external performance mark back yet.

Stowickthevast · 07/05/2026 10:57

@Talkingfrog both are out of 96 but the portfolio is 60% and the exam is 40%.

I'm not quite sure how the scaling works in relation to the raw data but this table is helpful

You don't get a grade for your coursework, only raw marks. The marks are then sent to the exam board, which generates a sample of the work which is sent off to the exam board moderator. They check the marking of the work and make changes if the teacher's marking is found to be incorrect. Grade boundaries aren't released until Results Day. You cannot appeal because you feel the marks aren't high enough. You would need to access the mark scheme for the coursework component and check her scores for her Assessment Objectives (AOs). If you feel strongly that she's been undermarked, you would need to complete an appeal form, that you can get from school, where you would need to point out where you feel the errors in marking are. You cannot just say you want a higher mark.

TeenToTwenties · 07/05/2026 13:30

Grade boundaries are a bit irrelevant at this point anyway.
it is total marks across NEAs and exams that counts. Nominal grade boundaries for individual units aren't important.

If NEA work has gone missing, the school can claim special consideration for lost coursework. However, it would help if they had been marked before being lost and school had the scores. I would strongly recommend you enquire with the Subject Leader, SLT and exams officer about this.

lanthanum · 07/05/2026 13:35

Someone I know challenged the mark they had been emailed, and was told no, the mark would stand. They were disappointed as it was way below what they had expected. It was only sometime later, as the result of a chance conversation, that it transpired that there had been a typo in the mark they'd been emailed, and the mark actually awarded (and which they were refusing to change) was rather higher.

BeasKnee · 07/05/2026 13:40

How long after art exams were students given the raw marks? DD only finished her art exam yesterday which seems quite tight for the teachers to mark, feed results back to students and submit to exam board by the 15th

Art subjects have a later deadline than the others, usually the 31st of May, but since that's in half term, the deadline is the 22nd of May.

Thank you. I am trying to get to the bottom of this, but it's a total mess. Is the deadline for submission to the exam board for Food Tech also 15 May?

Yes, but in certain cases we can apply for an extension with the exam boards.

Is this the case for all subjects with coursework?

Yes, all of them.
