Any parents at NBH / North Bridge house Canonbury?

Would be so grateful for a review of Northbridge House Canonbury if anyone has actually got a child there ?

My daughter really liked it when we looked around - she is dyslexic, very creative with a high IQ, loves school and desperate to learn but not learning well in a class of 30 so we feel we need to go down the indie route for secondary to give her the best chance. Based on current (mostly average, and low average in Maths) scores she would not get a place at a competitive/ selective school. Socially, however, she is very happy in a mainstream environment so I don't think somewhere like Fairley house is for her. She needs low pressure, small class sizes, supportive teaching, creativity (a good art dept) and a nice peer group - doesn’t feel like we’re asking the world but we have been considering moving out of London as the options for a girl of her profile seems to limited.

However, there is NBH Canonbury, which is our local indie - she could walk there in a few mins which makes it very attractive - and it seems a small, supportive option.

I read a lot of stuff on Mumsnet which talks about how NBH is a backup option, better / more high achieving schools available etc etc - but none of that is really relevant to us! Our state option is Highbury Girls but I worry about large class sizes, the focus on stem/ academics and the lack of creativity. My worries about NBH are the gender balance (seems very boy heavy) and whether my daughter would have enough girls to find a nice group of peers. Would also like to be reassured about the quality of teaching and whether they're likely to get the most out of a dyslexic girl who wants to do well but currently lacks confidence.

I have had a post similar to yours asking about NBH Hampstead, both schools owned by Cognita PE-backed. A couple of parents reached out to me and said not to touch it due to various issues. Happy to PM

These schools are undergoing a major transition and whilst it all happens there seem to be a lot of unhappy as well as non-existent teachers. In Canonbury I am told they can't play freely on lunch break one certain games due to it being small with not much space, very small cohort etc… someone also reached out to say their daughter left a teaching position there due to various issues regarding the children who are not supported

Oh no! Please do PM if you are able. I was sorry to hear about troubles at Hampstead , someone else told me it wouldn’t affect the Canonbury site as was considered very separate - but would definitely like to know more - if you have time to PM I would be v grateful

You can try some smaller state schools. My child is currently at a small faith school with around 20–24 pupils in each class, so teachers really get to know every child.

Have you considered Queenswood? Lots of girls head there from north London for exactly the reasons you describe. There is door to door transport.

@RatherBeOnVacation will PM!

I have a few friends with children at NBH Canonbury, and they all enjoy it. Many are like your daughter - into the arts, wanting small classes and supportive teachers (as you mention) - and have thrived. One has a child in student leadership, and she always says they would have never applied for student council at their last school but felt supported to do so because of the community/size. If your daughter enjoyed her visit, I would strongly consider.

I have friends who had SEN child in NB Canonbury till last year and they are very happy with everything.School was amazing supporting Sen. Their younger child got place at St Mary Mags but they're thinking of sending him to NB Canonbury as well. Yes, NB Hampstead is going through massive issues and shifts and not really recommend to us by friends. But that's not true for Canonbury as of April 2026. Another friend has child at NB prep and they're very happy with it so they'll progress to Canonbury. Apparently the Head teacher at Canonbury is amazing.
I would stay well away from Highbury Fields school.

Happy to pm - our son is at Canonbury year 7 and we are very happy with the school- it will def tick the boxes that you describe. True not many girls but everyone mixes well. I would recommend the school.

My friend works at NBH & is extremely happy in hr job & complimentary of the school & another friend has a ND son there & again is very happy.
My ND DD has had fabulous support at Highbury Fields & has stayed on for 6th form. Everyone from lunchtime staff to front of house staff have been great. She’s not hugely academic & the arts side of the school (drama particularly) was a contributing factor in her success in GCSE’s.
