Do schools get extra funding for pupils sitting Ebacc subjects in Yrs 10 and 11?

No

LIZS · 18/03/2026 17:44

No, ebacc is no longer a requirement

Ebaccquestion · 18/03/2026 17:47

Thanks both. So why do some schools push it so much?

Because it has been a measure on which schools are judged.
(It has been a 'mandatory to publish' measure I think.)

And as an aside, it is a nice 'all round' academic education (if you don't count creative subjects, and you ignore the fact they don't include RE as a humanity.)

Ebacc has been used in school league tables and many local authorities / academy trusts question schools on what percentage are achieving it. So schools push it because they are judged on it.

No. They pushed it in the past bc it was a measure by which schools were judged. That's no longer the case so hopefully the push will stop.

It’s not helpful for an entire cohort to be made to take GCSE in MFL. And I speak as a former teacher and still a tutor of MFL. Ofc I love it but it is not for everyone.

I should stress that I agree, taking an MFL at GCSE, along with a humanity and sciences and maths and English shows a decent breadth of subjects and should be advisable for any capable student. But that's not every student (in the same way, controversially, I think the Eng lit GCSE as it stands is not suitable for every student; either modify it or allow a few to drop it. But that’s another thread)
