hello, my son is in y5 and we are not feeling good atm about 11plus for our local grammars. He is very capable and academic and at greater deph, he would do well in grammar, but the competition is crazy and he is too slow, so looking at backup options. If he was a girl I Sutton GDST would be perfect, but for boys there seem to be either super selective Kings College Wimbledon or Witgift or non academic not great results HALL in Wimbledon or Ewell Castle.
I really dont want him to have a long commute and have local friends. Are there any other options I am not aware of? Should I consider Hall and Ewell Castle?. He would like to study in a castle :) but they just dont seem very focused on challenging children academically.

This list might be useful to give you an idea of all possibilities which you can narrow down.

I would say that the Hall is great for a very specific kind of child. Personally, I was not impressed by Ewell. Whitgift and Trinity certainly popular from Sutton and I would have thought Epsom was reasonably accessible as well and maybe Reigate Grammar depending on where in Sutton you are.

thank you, what kind of child do you mean for Hall?

There are also Trinity and Royal Russell either side of Lloyd Park and Epsom College in Epsom.

It is a very small school and my impression was it would be very good for a child who couldn’t cope with a typical school environment but that means it is not necessarily able to provide the same type of experiences that you might expect from a larger school, not that they don’t have music, sport, drama etc, it is just different largely due to size. Having said all that, I only visited for an open afternoon. If you haven’t been to look around, it is worth a visit to see a school which is different to many.

Hall is great if you are looking for small class sizes and a nurturing environment - and I think for those children that are capable academically they do get good results - it is just due to the fact that they are non-selective at entry that they have a broad results base. There is a new head who is determined to make it great and they are looking to improve sports and facilities etc (but clearly it will never compare with some of the bigger schools for facilities but I do think they have playing fields etc). Definitely worth a look around as it is (as the above post stated) great for the right child - but arguably that applies to all schools.
