Year 7 parents evening. Should I see geography teacher when ds doesn't do geography?

I can book parents evening from Monday. It's the one where all the teachers sit at desks in the sports hall and you get 5 minutes with each one. Starts off civilised and then descends into chaos. Anyway we've been given a list of teachers to book with including geography but ds doesn't do geography. He does cooking instead while the rest of the class do geography. So should I book to see the geography teacher (who is also his form tutor) to find out if there is anything I should be doing at home with him to make up for the fact that he will have missed a year of geography or not.

Of course you shouldn't see a teacher for a subject he isn't even doing. They will have a template report format that includes geography and as you said yourself, it has been marked as not applicable for your DS.

Don't take the parents evening slot away from someone else whose child actually does geography!

Do you also have SEN OP? I wonder why you are struggling to understand this situation?

OP asked a reasonable question. They didn't steal your parents' evening opportunity from you and spit in your face for good measure. There's no need to be rude.

JustGiveMeReason · 18/02/2026 21:38

No, you shouldn't book a Geography appointment if he doesn't do Geography.

But you should ask the SENCo if (s)he is available on Parents' Evening or if you can have an appointment at another time.

It seems like you have reading comprehension issues since you are struggling to understand that this teacher is also the child’s form tutor and therefore one of the most important teachers she could see.

It’s not an evening to see form tutors.

I wouldn't book an appointment. Your child is probably getting much more out of cooking than geography, especially if the school have chosen to give him a different pathway, the bar is quite high for things like this. I would email the SENCO or head of year to ask what the plan is for y8.

I’m sorry op, I found it a humorous post.

hyggetyggedotorg · 18/02/2026 21:48

To be fair, I can see where the poster is coming from who thinks it’s selfish to see a teacher for a subject DS doesn’t take.

At DD’s school there are 30 slots for each teacher, bookable online, but some teachers take two sets within the year group. So 60 parents trying to book 30 slots.

OP herself has said that this is parents’ evening not a meet your form tutor evening, which occurred separately.

OP, I would think the teacher would stare at you blankly & wonder why you booked to see her. She’s there as a geography teacher to discuss progress in geography, not as form tutor. My DS1 also has SEN (he’s 28 now) & dropped RE in Year 8 or 9 as he struggled with the concept of it. Incidentally, his form tutor was also the RE teacher & I certainly wasn’t invited to see her at parents’ evening. As DS didn’t do RE.

Tacohill · 18/02/2026 21:49

No it would be pointless as she can’t tell you anything about his geography progress.

If you’re concerned about his lack of geography teaching, then look on the bbc bitesize website and it will give you an idea.
Some things are more important than others.

Does he play things like Minecraft and watch tv programs/ YouTube that are linked to geography?
I find kids learn so much more this way than just reading it off the internet.

You can also buy some really cool books.
And do experiments at home like making a volcano or rocket.

That's not how our secondary school parents evening system works at all.

Why does autism mean cooking instead of geography? Geography is such an important subject.

Talkingfrog · 18/02/2026 23:18

You may find the teacher cancels it anyway if they do not take him for geography. I don't think I would book it on that night, but if you feel you need to catch up with his form tutor about him, then contact the school separately to request a meeting. If you arrange one specifically you will probably get an appointment that is a bit less rushed and can get more out of it.

Thankyou. We can't see the senco at parents evening. We have a meeting booked with her but it's not until May. I'm not sure why geography was chosen to be replaced by cooking. I hadn't realised it was all geography lessons he was missing until a couple of weeks ago, I thought it was half of them. I'm not sure what the plan is for year 8, I'm not sure if the school know for certain at the moment as a lot of it depends on funding. He has quite high needs as he has the emotional development of a toddler but academically he is average in half the subjects and foundation level in the other half. Apart from music where he is at greater depth. The senco told the LA that they couldn't meet his needs but the LA named them on his ehcp anyway so they had to take him.

You should really ask the school, rather than get a million confused answers from strangers who can't possibly know what the arrangement is supposed to be...!

Many years ago, I did Maths, Physics, and Chemistry 'A' levels, plus Economics 'O' level. My Mum went to parent's evening instead of my Dad, just before the exams. My Mum spent all her time chatting to the Economics teacher, although the 3 'A' levels were far more important to my future than the one 'O' level. "Such a lovely man, and noone wanted to talk to him".
