Hi all

Am I going mad? I'm sure we had a thread to discuss those current Y5 who will be taking the exam in September. Has it disappeared, or am I having a moment?

I think that you have to remember that if you have a child seriously trying for the 11+, they are already a child who is quite bright, hard working and motivated. These qualities will serve them well wherever they go. We are results day today, and whether DD passes or not, I don't worry about her future, I know she will do well wherever she goes, and whichever school that it, they will be lucky to have her.

I got into a highly selective (30 applications for every place) but refused to go, much to my mums annoyance. I walked out with all A's and A*'s at gcse and A level, got a highly competitive uni offer and loved my school.

So try to let go of some of that anxiety if you can. I know it feels huge right now, but they will be fine

Edited

You are right.

Sorry - quite right. Just it wasn't a particular weakness so was surprised to see a non-passing score. But yes, objectively 113 is still absolutely solid, thanks for the correction.

How is everyone else doing? Anyone still waiting for results?

We have to wait until Monday for CSSE although I'm not sure when they get released. I have heard that it can be late.

Groove599 · 10/10/2026 19:08

Still a while to go for Trafford - I think it’s Wednesday 21st. Like others, I’m finding it very hard to wait. I keep going down rabbit holes of looking at prior year admission scores and statistics etc as I am a bit obsessed!

notanothernvr · 12/10/2026 06:58

Anyone waiting for Gloucestershire? Good luck today!

Scout2016 · 12/10/2026 08:37

@Groove599 also waiting for Trafford- what makes you think it will be 21st please?

We only looked round 2 as we felt the others were too far away but now I'm regretting it in case she gets in one of them and not the nearer ones. So hard knowing what to do!

I swear I saw something somewhere at some point (vague I know!) that said 21st, but for the life of me I can’t remember where and I can’t find it again now. Perhaps it was a date in relation to Loreto and St Ambrose and I’ve got mixed up (although we didn’t sit for those schools).

If it’s later than 21st then I am going to be a nervous wreck. We are out of catchment for all the schools so relying on (hoping for) admission on a high-score basis.

Scout2016 · 12/10/2026 15:24

@Groove599 thanks. We are on the border of 2 LAs - if we walk less than 10 minutes down the road we are in Trafford but that counts for nothing really.

We were thinking that if DC passes for a school we haven't visited we could contact them and ask to look round...but if they leave it that late the schools will be shut for half term so that screws that vague plan!

Groove599 · 14/10/2026 03:37

Still driving myself crazy counting down the days!

@Scout2016 which schools are you getting results for? We’ve asked for AGSB, Sale and Urmston, with that being our likely preference order. Stretford seem to have changed their oversubscription criteria this year such that a high score from a distance is not helpful, so we’ve left Stretford out as we wouldn’t get in.

That's interesting, Stretford is one we didn't view as we thought it would be too hard to get too. Basically tram into town and back out - seemed too much and too long a day. Then we wondered if we had been too harsh as a neighbour's kid went there and it was managable, so we rang to ask if we can just go and visit and they said no. Fair enough.

I just asked for results for all except the boys' one because I thought I might as well. But Urmston is too far away in reality and we didn't visit it either.
Altrincham girls open evening was rammed and we didn't make the best of it, the head's talk was full. I was getting strong desperation vibes from the other parents. It's a bit of a trek too.

If I'm coming across as a bit clueless it's because I am. We are also torn on single sex and on how far to expect her to travel.

LinearTransformations · 14/10/2026 09:28

We’re still waiting- i think we should receive results Monday 19th.
I don’t have high hopes and just want to know to ‘move on’ so to speak.

well done to all those who have been successful!

PiesAreSquared · 14/10/2026 13:13

Got results unexpectedly early this morning (two days early, Warwickshire). She smashed it and will be off to SGGS I think. Good luck to all of you and even if you don't get exactly what you wanted, the process will have been invaluable for them.

I’m still not sure how realistic an impression you can get from any school at an open evening to be honest. They all have some Grade 8 piano player playing a lovely tune while you settle down for the head’s speech, and they all have all the good science experiment stuff out on the benches (AGSB had some fire-making experiment going on). I really don’t know how much correlation there is between a quality open evening and a quality school.

I’d grill your neighbour a bit to see what they think of Stretford.

Anyone else waiting for results tomorrow? Feel nervous but also a sense of relief its almost over...

Hello,
My ds is only year 3, just wondering for those that did pay for tutors, what year you started this? Thanks

Hello,
My ds is only year 3, just wondering for those that did pay for tutors, what year you started this? Thanks

Depends. If they have gaps in curriculum learning, then some tutoring in year 4 can be helpful, so they start year 5 ready to go. Whether they go for 11+ or not, it's still helpful to make sure really secure in curriculum topics.

Also depends very much on your child. At start of year 5 it seemed so far away that DD wasn't very focused, but others are different.

In year 3, you really won't have an idea whether your child is '11+ material' and they aren't old enough to know if they want to aim at grammar or not. Our youngest is year 3, and there is no way we could make the decision yet on whether to go for 11+ or not. Give it a year, see where school test results are mid year 4, and then you will have a greater sense.

Results out today and we made it!! We are so relieved. Went straight to dd school to let her know and she burst into tears of joy and relief! An emotional day for us and feeling so blessed. Anyone else get their results today?

Sima1 · 16/10/2026 00:16

Which county are you in? Some counties have been out for a week or more - others aren't expected until next week.

Hey, Within Trafford! They said on the 21st or before so I guess it’s a waiting game!

Waiting is basically the worst part. My eldest's results came out at 3.30 p.m. 3 years ago... and my youngest's didn't come out until 3.50 p.m. - those 20 minutes I reckon I refreshed my email about 100 times! Good luck to you!

My hunch is that they won’t arrive for Trafford before Tuesday at the earliest, and probably Wednesday.

Interesting that you’ve heard 21st as well. Can you remember where that comes from?

Are you waiting for the Catholic schools or for Trafford Consortium?

BusyDaddy · 16/10/2026 23:37

I am wondering, do they give out the scores so you can sort of plan it? All of my DS tests email are just outcome without scores (unless you fail to meet their criteria), and even then there are still hundreds of children more than available seats that has passed so you don't really know until 1 March. It sounded like its not the standard practice in other areas which gives out the scores directly.
