Does applying for a music scholarship improve chances of admission?

My child has a strong music background (Grade 8 on one instrument and Grade 5 on another). We hadn’t originally planned to apply for a 11+ music scholarship, as we don’t necessarily want the additional pressure that can come with it.
However, I’m now wondering whether not applying for a music scholarship could actually reduce their chances of being offered a place
In practice, does applying for a music scholarship genuinely improve admission prospects, or are scholarship decisions usually separate from the main offer?

I don’t think it will make much odds. If they qualify academically they may then be considered for a music award. If they do not meet basic entry criteria being talented at music won’t matter unless borderline. Some instruments may be more sought after than others when competing for music though,

if a child has already passed the entrance exam / met the academic criteria, would applying (or not applying) for a music scholarship make any difference at that stage?

No they have already either qualified to be offered a place or not. A cocurricular scholarship is considered separately

What is your orchestral wind instrument?

I think applying for any scholarship can be a good idea. It means more members of staff get to meet your child and the school has a more rounded picture of them.

It's not going to make any difference at all if they've passed the entrance exam. A music scholarship is an 'addition' to the main application. Obviously if a child is particularly talented it may interest the school to offer a scholarship as well but normally any scholarship offer comes after the offer of a place, not instead of or because of (obviously if the school has a music specialism it may have a higher influence)

I’m sure it could depend on the school but my LOs prep encouraged us to apply for several scholarships.
LO received one scholarship but trying out for others turned out to be a very rewarding experience.
Your LO is clearly a talented musician and I would think that any music department would be delighted to hear them even if they didn’t accept or were not offered a scholarship.
